i had the same issue on my 97gls. i got the K&N and about a month later i installed it becuase i was afraid i'd break something. i think you have a pretty good idea how to do it but your afraid of messing something up. dontorry you won't. theres nothing near there that will cause serious damage. it may look intimidating but its not. im 16 and the 97 is my first car, so i was real tense when i changed it, but i still got it. ill tell you how to do it on the 97 if it may help you. unclip the clips around the airbox. second theres some kind of rope running along the air box that is held in place by some sort of umm... they look like this ] but facing downward and the rope fastens into it, anddisconnect it from the ]. next there are two vacume lines one yellow and another red if i am right. dont disconnect them from the air box, but there is a place where each vacume line is attatched to itself again, disconnect from there. next unplug the mass air flow sensor and pull off the air box. you won't mess anything up and even if you do you can still ****drive*** the car to a shop. just plug the mass sensor back and it should drive.

thanks for the replay and i wish it was that easy but on the newer jetta's 05' 06' there is a engine cover that you have to get off to get to the air filter. i can't get the engine cover off, i got it half off but there is a bolt on the left hand side near the back that i can't finger out how to get to or maybe there is another way. anyone else knows please let me know??

you have to remove the clamp for the intake pipe and the engine cover pulls off

i've done that, the two air intakes that are on the right hand side but there is a bolt on the left side near the back that is holding it or something else.

Well I figure out how to replace my air filter. You have to remove the two air intakes on the right hand side then the engine cover will just pull off. Be brave because it doesn’t pull off easy but it will just pull off. Then once you have that off on the underside of the engine cover there will be six screws that you’ll take off and there is where you’ll find the air filter. Best of luck.
