I have a 98 Chevy Z71. I got in my truck last night and turned the heater on at high speed. A couple of minutes into my trip I started to smell something burning and a few seconds later smoke started coming out of my panel vents. I quickly turned the fan to "OFF" and the smoke stopped. Now my fan doesn't work at any speed, but I do still have heat. Should I replace the blower motor or something else?

Run a test on the blower motor. Unplug it and run a fused jumper to hot side and ground the ground sise and see how it does. i
If all is well move on to the something else.
A resister pack comes into mind.
Let us know how it goes.

Ok, so I bought a new blower motor. While i was removing the old one, water started leaking out from it. After I finally got the old motor out, the housing for the plastic fan was filled with water. Plus I looked into the hole in the motor and the metal was rusted...most likely the motor shorted out. I soaked all the water up, got the new blower motor back in and everything worked fine. So now my next question is why would there be water in the fan housing? I didn't see any evidence of a possible leak either.

Check your widshield wiper cowl drains.
Pull blower mt and run a water hose into the windshiels cowl and watch for leaks into blower mt. cover.
Or check with your local body shop or dealer.
