I replaced my hubs with waren manuel hubs last year.
This year my wife came home smelling somthig hot and a noise from front.
The hubs are working, front wheels move toghether when lifted off the ground but transfer case doesn't seam to conect front and rear wheels together.
The t case will shift to N and Low does change guear ratio.
Help
LMP you helped it the past what do you think?

One more question..to begin with
If you lift ONE front wheel with T_case engaged in 4WD (hi or lo), are you able to rotate the wheel by hand?
COMment: I cannot see clearly a connexion between "something hot" in front and T-case. HOwever, problem with wheel bearings have been reported, so while you have one wheel off ground...and check the other one too, check for any bearing play. What I suspect is either caliper freeze or bearing side play that let brakes continue to grip in normal running, leading to generation of heat.
...but in fact...you did not specify if you have identified from where the heat smell was coming, so we are speculating.
On the other hand, 4WD on T_case must NEVER be used on solid surface, or in fact, on any surface where 2WD fills the bill. Keeping the hubs locked in is not detrimental (except on fuel consumption) if 2WD is kept on T-case except in rare conditions where 4WD is expressly needed..

Unlock hubs an wheel turns.
Wheel berrings are not loose.
Wheel will turn by hand but not turn without me turning it. It wont free spin more than a 1/4 rev.
Only using 4wd in 16" of snow.
Could t case not be conecting with front shaft?

PS
If both front wheels off ground and hubs locked t case in 4wd turning one wheel turns the other the oppisit direction.
If both front wheels off ground and hubs un locked t case in 4wd turning one wheel does not turns the other.

What you describe is normal behaviour; every aspect of it when T-case in 4wd is relevant of T-case engaging front wheels...so from all of that I see no wrong.
Now the heat thing is something else. SO....
HOwever, : "Wheel will turn by hand but-not-turn-without-me-turning-it. It wont free spin more than a 1/4 rev" I'm not sure what it means...?!?...explain

I got stuck in my drivway and only the right rear wheel would spin.
The front would not.
If the breaks hung up would that cause the the front not engage or spin ????
The hot smell im not shure was there as I did not smell any thing only my wife did and she was nurvous.
With wheels off the ground t case seams normal but when driving thay dont seam to help at all. :dunno:
it handled better in 2wd than 4wd ???

...I'd check the hubs first ....If one is dead you have no front wheel drive at all. (barely engaging: enough to hold by hand, not good for traction)
If unconvinced, I'd go under with a pipe wrench and try to rotate front driving shaft with 4wd engaged (hubs unlocked or front wheel(s) up.. and rear on the ground. Do not pry too much, no question to cork the DS. I'd be surprised it rotates..this is quite heavy stuff in the T-case. THe hubs will give first. ..but surprises may be part of the game.

Ok I am doing this again.
Front wheels off the ground
T case in 2wd
Hubs unlocked and wheels turn independently.
Hubs locked and each wheel turns front drive shaft but does not turn the other wheel.
I shift into 4wd
Front wheels off the ground
T case in 4wd
Hubs unlocked and wheels turn independently.
Hubs locked and each wheel does not turn front drive shaft but does not turn the other wheel. :screwy:
Now one wheel off the ground.
T case in 2wd
Hubs unlocked and wheels turn free.
Hubs locked wheel turns front shaft.
T case in 4wd
Hubs unlocked and wheels turn.
Hubs locked and wheel wont turn.
Is this all normal or too much info.

2wd Front wheels off the ground
Hubs unlocked and wheels turn independently.OK
Hubs locked and each wheel turns front drive shaft but does not turn the other wheel. OK.. driving shaft has less drag than the other wheel caliper....or is this the only reason???.
THIS ONE IS SCREWY:
4wd Front wheels off the ground
Hubs unlocked and wheels turn independently. OK
Hubs locked and each wheel does not turn front drive shaft OK (but does the wheel itself turns? It should turn and turn the other wheel in opposite direction..unless there is a lot of internal drag ,.... or the wheel turns...and the idler gears are gone in the differential.....and some junk metal caught in the gears provides drag sufficient to make each wheel able to rotate the free driving shaft when you make the test in 2WD.
but (AS IT TURNS) does not turn the other wheel. Well it should . SO you have a point here. ?!?!
Now one wheel off the ground. (tested on each wheel)

I am going to take it to a tranny shop and have the front diff opened.
I think with the noise and heat mentioned earlier the diff is toast. :swear:
What is a reasonable cost to rebuild front diff. :werd:

If you agree with the complement of details I have added to fully specify your findings, I too would remove that diff. cover to have a glance..at least to make or break the suspicion.

Found the problem.
The split ring on the left side half shaft came out of its grove, allowing the shaft to back ¾ of the way out of the hub. This caused the hub and half shaft to strip ¼ of the teeth off. I pulled the half shaft back into place and replace the split ring for now. Will replace the hub and half shaft as soon as possible.
Thanks A million LMP.
Ps do you remember the problem with the code 1308 I had
chassis acceleration sensor:
The code said low signal so I used a self-tapping screw to the base of sensor frame and one to the body frame and connected a wire. Light went out and has stayed out for 3 months so far.
