flooring the car? blowing the engine?

if i floor the 2.4 grand am engine, it's going to go however fast it goes, but do you think this will blow the motor? cuz im scared to give it to much gas, i can get it to 110, but i don't ever keep it their or try to go higher cuz im scared the engine will blow do you think that this would happen if i tried to go anyfaster, or held 110 for more than a few minutes?

Just dont ever drive past the redline. If you hear your engine cut in and out (over rev) STOP!, other than that your engine shouldn't blow, but it will add to the wear on the engine, and it might overheat if you hold a high speed for a long time. So I wouldn't recommend it. Plus, if your tires aren't speed rated, they can only withstand 112 mph, anything over that and you might have a blowout; I hope you have good medical insurance if this happens.

I dont know why you want to go faster than 110 though, personally I dont think it's worth losing your license over if you get caught. (Unless you do it on a track?)

well when im going 110, the rpm is on about 4000, and it doesn't redline till 6000, but their is a funny noise that comes like something going in and out, like a soft hum to a loud hum, is that what you mean buy the engine going to high, cuz 4000, rpms at 110, i didn't think would be to much, but maybe with all this american made crap it is... anyhoo what do you think?

As long as you don't hold the engine at the redline for an extended period of time you will be fine. If you hit the rev limiter don't worry. No damage will be done as long as you don't continuosly bounce off of it. It's there to protect the engine. The main way that engines are damaged are from excessive rev's with no load on them i.e. revving really high in neutral. This does several bad things to the engine. You also might want to switch to synthetic oil if you are not using it now. The engine will wear more at steady high RPM's. The engine will wear significantly less with synthetic oil. For example I cruise at 110 in my 1999 nissan altima with 116,000 miles on ithe track.The engine speed was around 3800 RPM at 110 mph. I am using mobil 1 extended performance 5w-30 synthetic which I am changing at 6-7000 mile intervals. I beat the crap out of the car all the time and so far it is running good and the oil comes out still semi clean. IMHO you can beat on your car as much as you want as long as you stick to a rigourous maintenace schedule and you will not have any problems. Just an observation from experience. Also, good point by bluepv00 about the speed rating of tires. If you want to go fast, get higher speed rated tires.

I don't mean to sound like a sally but my aunt is a lawer and with some of the stories she has told me I want to clear my butt of any responsibiliy.

if your car is running in decent condition it should be able to handle it...if it did blow up after that little bit of abuse, i'm never going to buy a GM again......i regularly hit 8000+ in my GSR, but then again, its built for it. It shouldn't blow up, but you never know.

Everything said above, AND, anyone know what the speed limiter is set at on a Grand AM? 110 seems like that would be the limit of a car like that.

yeah ull prolly run out of power to keep speeding up before you hit the redline. besides, its a grand am... who freakin cares what the top speed is lol. Whatever you do, if you want the engine to last, dont rev it in neutral and DO NOT mash the pedal when the engine is still cold!!! This will eat up your internals faster than you can say "oh, shit!" trust me i know from experience lol, my project truck had an old 350 v-8 in it that i decided to blow up and beat the hell out of before i swapped it. That mofo went out in less than 3 or 4 months lol, it was backfiring and missing, burning oil, and the cam was ground down pretty bad. that might be due also to the fact that i repeatedly tried blowing the motor in first gear with no avail (65 in first gear with a v-8) lol not good for it. it was always a little crappier every time i slowed down again

A 99 grand am will cut off at 108.
