84 Maxima Will Not Start Fom The Ignition

I have a 1984 Maxima that won't start from the ignition switch after my son tried to install a stereo. He said he didn't short anything, he saw no smoke. Yeah right, mighty funny the car was running before that and I can smell the aroma of something electrical. I can turn the switch on and hear the fuel pump and a few other things energizing. At this point if you turn the switch, the car will not start but if you go under the hood and short the terminals on the starter solenoid , the vehicle will start and run fine. I have fire at the ignition switch but no fire at the gray relay at the back of the under hood relay box. Can anyone tell me where to look to find out why the fire isn't reaching the starter? Which wire at the relay is suppose to carry the fire? What is in line between the ignition and the starter relay? Is the starter relay the gray box at the back of the relay block. Any assistance will be kindly appreciated.

...Any assistance ....
Check/Swap fuses (broken fuse may look great). Alarm, clutch sw(M/T), selectror sw(A/T) may disable inhibitor relay. Through this relay, starter relay gets pwr.
Lots of your circuitry might be identical with this page info, but seek (at top left) for 'Favorite Links' for your model... http://www.cardomain.com/ride/748507/5

I have the chiltons old service manual and have been trying to identify the inhibitor switch and the wiring from the switchto the starter by way of the relays. This book doesn't have a good wiring diagram picture. By the way, all the fuses inside the vehicle checked out good. I need help quick

If one is not yet lost, no to worry - open Chilton and then u really are... Try to find better manual through suggested link. At least Maxima -89 -94 start circuit can be found, 100% certain...
Bypass the problem:
- Its easy to install extra relay, connect its output to solenoid and take input from start sw.
- They used to wire directly from ign sw to solenoid, ign sw will last 5yrs, then its contacts burn... Temporarily ok.
