RPM question

I have a 1995 z24. I was told that cars get the best gas mileage at 1500 rpms. my uncle used to work for ford designing cars. well my car at 70mph is running at 2300 rpms. I was wondering what everyone elses cars are running at and if this is really high. I thought it would be closer to the 1500 rpms?

He can't make a general claim like that, as every car motor is different. However, its obvious that the lower the RPM's, the less fuel you're burning. Cars are always the MOST efficient when they're not running at all, and the closer you can keep it to 0 RPM's, the better you mileage will be.

Then again, I'd not worry so much. Your Uncle probably spent a lot of time working around Pushrod motors, which don't rev as high (generally speaking) as DOHC motors. Its perfectly natural to have those numbers at those speeds.

I wouldn't drive your car below 2000 RPM. You'll be bogging it down. This can cause a lot of damage.

well for any 4 cylinders 2.2 engine the normal rpm's at 70 miles per hour is around 3000

maybe a little less so i dont think is a way to keep that speed with lower rpm
