doctors

I work with them all the time at work. I can't stand their egos!! They come barging into my office, knowing I'm on the phone, and make demands as if it was their office. What gives? Does that little piece of paper you have on the wall with the two letters MD entitle you to the sympathy and respect of society as we know it? It pisses me off to no end that the doctors I work with think they're entitled and carry around that ego like a badge of courage.

My dad is a doctor and has been practising sine the late 1950's (He's 74 and still working)

He is the first one to say some doctors are arrogant and overbearing.
Whats more, they are with each other!
Doctors often have to consult with each other (especially specialists) and unless they are co workers, they often have little respect for other physicians.

Just ask a nurse (any nurse) what they think of doctors and you'll get an earful.

Mind you, if I spent 10-15 years in training, I would be an arrogant prick, too.

All I'm saying is that they chose the profession that they're in. If it takes 10-15 years to establish a foundation for that profession, so be it. However, they're the ones who made that conscious choice.

Everyone has a choice and I believe that being a prick because you think you've 'earned' it through education just don't cut it. I'm no slacker and I believe in education but I don't belittle anyone nor throw it in their face. I have an BSEE as well as an MBA. Not one person, besides my boss, knows that I have these degrees as I choose not to flaunt it. I just don't see the need to do so.

Capicorn, what do you do in this office? I work with doctors everyday in an ED and I never have problems with them. In fact most of them are nice people and are my friend, we all go out to dinner and have poker nights at eachothers houses. So it might just be you. What kind of office is it? Family practice, Internal Med, Surgical clinic? The doc probably see alot of pt. and don't feel they have alot of time to just wait for you or even me to get off the phone. Its called multi tasking. But i do agree some doctors do carry around there ego and have a swelled head about themselves, I am a lucky one who does not have to deal with alot of docs that double as ASS HOLES....

potsdemcartel, I think you're looking at it the wrong way. Being proud of your accomplishments does not mean you're an asshole. My mother is a nurse and I've heard hours upon hours of "stress relief" about these doctors. They don't communicate with the nurses, and don't show them any respect when the nurses are already a step ahead of the doctor. Sure, business is business.. yes, but there is also a thing called gratitude. When somebody else makes your job that much easier you shouldn't walk all over them even if you've had 15 years of "PRACTICE".

And a truck driver just may well be a more respectable person than any doctor. Respect the person for the person.

i understand it is a decision they have made, but do you think that a truck driver (no offense) is on the same level as a 10+ year trained docter?

should that truck driver get the same respect and prestige as a cardiac surgeon?
i mean, as you stated, the truck did choose to become a truck driver.

also, the docter has overcame and fought for where he is. what i mean is, everybody wants to be a doc or a lawyer, or an engineer, or something high level. but most simply give up or suppress their urges because it is "too hard".
docters have rose up above that and instead of saying forget it, its too hard, they have persevered.

becoming a MD isn't easy.
so just the fact that they chose that difficult-ass job, shows they deserve more respect.

for example: Lance Armstrong. what makes him so special?

think about every influential person throughout history. did these people become famous because they took the easy route?

i plan on going to med school.

Um...disagreed, i dont believe thats how it is at all....do you really think that the guy working behind the counter at tha gas station CHOSE to do that....do you think the women at Burger King taking your order CHOSE to do that, fuck no they didnt.....of course we need these people to do the jobs they do for society to function, cause not everyone can be a doctor, but nobody wants to be them... its not like when their kindergarden teacher asked them what they wanted to be when they grew up they were like, "a gas station attendent, fast food worker, etc".....and yes some people are better than others.....for example doctors are better than murderers, why cause they help people not kill them, DUH....you cant possibly believe that no one is better than anyone else and everyone is equal, its a line of shit......and now you have my :2cents:

I could probably go on and on with what I do but the argument I'm presenting is that the doctor may have earned his degree but that in no way translate to earning my respect. For the sake of argument, the doctor has spent countless years in school-- does society owe him a debt of gratitude or is that effort compensated by the high cost of his services/healthcare?

Here's where I'm coming from. Lets take away the office setting. You're at a bar having a couple of drinks with some of your buddies after work. You meet new people and introduce yourself. The other person responds by 'I'm a doctor' instead of their name. BAM! Instant respect? I doubt it. I'm at a bar drinking. I don't give a crap what you do other than what NFL team you're supporting on the big screen in front of us.

My point being-- respect as an individual is not contingent on your profession.

First off, child pornography is a crime and not a profession. No society would praise/respect criminal offenders; especially offenders of this nature.

Going by your example with Marino. I would think-- man, this guy is great on the field but my judgements would be made through the ensuing conversation. I respect him for his accomplishments on the field (such as doctors in the OR), but I may or may not respect him as a person depending on what he reveals in the ensuing conversation or in the manner in which he declines such an engagement.

One thing I'd like to point out is that this example is of an individual in the public eye-- meaning the media has already painted him as either a positive or negative personality. Our perceptions are already tainted in this sense.

Personally, I think that your final comment is of a philosophical nature and is moot in this discussion. We're not talking about defining the term 'failure' nor 'professional failure'.

I agree that hard work should be rewarded (for doctors, its the high compensation that they receive and the prestige of being called doctor). However, if I'm hearing your argument correctly, doctors are entitled to an abnormally large ego and are entitled to tastlessly flaunt your education due to the fact that they 'lost out' on the college parties that they could have enjoyed. Is this retribution for lost youth and time?

Political Correctness FTW! That's a load of crap, and anyone with any education knows it. There are multiple differences between the sexes, mental, emotional and physical. It's no big secret that the average man is stronger/faster than the average woman. It's also widely accepted that men excel at multi-tasking while women are better and viewing a problem as part of a whole, or seeing the big picture. I have more, but I think that's enough for now. As for races being equal, also not true. I'll try to avoid anything that could be attributed to culture, but if nothing else we're different physically. The average asian is quite a bit smaller than the average caucasian. Not to mention the race of a person(caucasoid, mongoloid, negroid) can be determined from skin or hair samples. We're all different, we're not all equal, life is tough like that, get over it. The end. :smile:

Doctors can show off a little by all the hard work they have done to get there. I know this one flies in from Tulsa in a helicopter to eat at his favorite restaurant. They DO NOT have the right though to not be civilized.

Where I work I often have to do interviews for mental and phsical abuse cases as well as neglect cases. I can be running all over the facility interviewing 20 staff members and 30 patients and when I get to the Dr., he gives me shit for asking him questions and taking up his valuable Nurse flirtting time. Most of the Dr's I deal with are ok but you always get a couple that think they are better than everyone else and to talk to us "common folk" is below them. I show resect to everyone I encounter and expect that same respect to be shown to me. I don't give a damn what your job is, if you do it well the truck driver deserves them same respect that the Dr. gets.
