'90' Starter Problems

I have intermittent power going to the starter. Starter would engage only some of the time. Took off starter......main battery cable has constant 12V like it should until you turn on the key. Problem is ignition wire going to starter has 12V until you turn on the key. Then there is no voltage on the wire.
