Just purchased a 1990 88 with 68K miles for my daughter. Car ran well well for a couple weeks, now it stalls on deceleration (entering parking lot, slow corners, etc). Otherwise, no noticeable problem with engine - car starts right back up after the stall and it has thrown no diagnostic light. This has stalled around 4 times in the past 10 days, I have no service records on the vehicle. Also noticed the AC compressor short cycling but I don't see a connection. Any troubleshooting tips appreciated.

Having owned 2 Oldsmobile 98's (an 87' and an 89) with the same engine I have had some experience with some of the quirks that can come with this. If you try "two footing" the pedals while you are decelerating. I.e. give the car some gas as you break and it slows down. If it does not stall out there is a good chance you Mass Air Flow Sensor is at fault. A few other things to consider...mileage aside this vehicle is still old, electrical components on the car such as MAS sensor, crank case sensor, EGR valve, PCV valve, and O2 sensor most likely have not been touched on it. All of these components could be a factor in your problem. Before changing out parts yourself it’s probably best to have a diagnostic check done on the car first. The PCV valve and O2 sensors are inexpensive fixes, and they could increase your gas mileage. The PCV valve on your engine is located on the back left side of the crank case right next to the fuel rail, its is well hidden on this car, you can change it yourself but you will have to stress a bit with it to squeeze it out. It could also just be require a tune up and an air filter if you have not already done. All things aside the engine itself is good to an easy 200-300 thousand miles. Hope this helps you out.

Short cycling ac is usually low on freon, the stalling may be a matter of cleaning the the throttle body and removing the iac to clean the pintle seat.
