Clutch on 2000 Ford Focus wagon w/automatic

I've been happy with my used 2000 Ford Focus SE wagon, now about 80,000 miles, but had a problem on a recent trip to Calif. from Seattle. I was going over a series of six percent grades on the Calif.-Oregon border when the clutch began to chatter.
The car's an automatic and I'd just been letting it auto-downshift to maintain a spead of about 60 mph. I let the clutch cool down then just pulled into the show lane and chugged over the pass at 35 mph. Coming back I did the same thing.
Is this a feature or a bug? Can the clutch be adjusted or do I have to live with 35 mph in mountain passes?
Appreciate any feedback.
