What's a good scanner for shadetree type to buy that will read climate control codes and transmission codes--not just the motor codes?

Just an Fyi, this question "which scanner to buy" has just been asked in the Ford Windstar forum. I'm not sure how to answer your question about the tranny or climate control codes. This answer may come up on that thread.

Thanks, I'll bug over there and read--even though I swore I'd never have anything to do with Ford after my 93 Windsor 351 motor. Grin. Never bought another one. Never shopped Ford. I did win a 79 Pacecar in a radio station contest--kept it for 6 months or so.

If you're in the market for a scanner, I would consider a data scanner if you want to do some serious diagnostic work. The only place that I know of that can offer enhanced sensor data along with bi-directional control at an affordable price is here... http://autoenginuity.com/order.html

I bought the generic usb type and it's worked on all the cars that I own. I'm considering upgrading to the enhanced mode in the near future. If you're only looking for GM support, it'll run you about $400.00. You may think that's a lot of money, but take a look at the sensor list that it supports not to mention having bi-directional control also for the engine and transmission. If you still think that's too much money, then consider that a Tech II scanner, the same scanner that the GM dealership uses, costs $3695.00 and that's just for the basic data list. If you want the enhanced data list, then it'll cost $5495.00.

So to put everything in perspective for a comparison:

Tech 2 to read basic data: $3695.00
Tech 2 to read enhanced list: $5495.00

Autoenginuity USB hardware to read basic data: $249.95
Autoenginuity USB hardware to read ehanced data: $149.95

It's just my opinion...hope you find the scanner that suits your needs.
