A major component like your rack and pinion ought to last over 100k, that's only an opinion, but it would be more important if this were a warranty issue. But since it's not, this questioning with no historical detail about your car is not going to help you fix it.

I am curious to know some detail about your repair efforts since I have a 94 Geo Prizm with 147k on it which has recently been needing occasional addition of fluid to the steering system. Maybe there is a trend here, I don't know, but post some more detail about the car along with your efforts and we might have some discussion on this topic. Thanks, :)

Thanks, :)i bought this 94 prizm,a/t,a/c,164000 miles, for $925. a couple of days ago.in new orleans, but it was not flooded.a lady was the original owner for 9 yr. then another for 2 yr.transmission was serviced at 46k and 95k.alternator was replaced when car was 1 year old. starter was replaced around 120k.drivers side seat belt replaced around 120k.timing belt replaced at 95k,but they did not do seals. then at 142k timing belt replaced with newcam and crankshaft seals installed.front strut tower(mount?),drivers side replaced yesterday. power steering hose replaced yesterday.alot of reciepts talk about cleaning the brakes? must be a dealer gimmick!a/t takes it,s time upshifting. i,m in the process of checking that out.radiator and ignition wires and water pump look original. heater works and a/c works. a/c had expansion valve sticking at 146k. evap and valve replced. question = if this a/t goes out, is it easy to install a 5 speed stick??

jamesmetairie, at this stage, you seem to have put a lot of effort into maintaining this car as well as the previous owner (it doe not appear neglected), it would appear that your rack and pinion has had nominal wear and tear and not unexpected to need repair/replacement at this time, however you just mentioned the pwr steering hose, was this really the problem (leakage?) and not the rack and pinion?

About replacement of your trans to a manual, personally I don’t think I would, but you might look at these threads:
