First Run with the Z28

Long story beforewarned, Cliffs at bottom

So after getting my Z28 i've really just babied it and enjoyed it leather seats, nice system, cozy and good milage for what it is I've played around a tiny bit nothing much. In this car the Century mark comes up quite fast, gearing is great i'm just really happy in her.

I work with one of my best friends and his family, who are much like family to me. I used to always share my kills from my hatch and jeep we always talk cars because we all enjoy them. Well i've yet to bring up the power it has I just smile if I am asked if its fast.

My "Uncle"/boss has an 04 Maruder hot ride I was a fan of it day one and he knows how much I really love his car. He tells me this weekend his winter tires are going on and he wants me to run him for this weeks pay. I laugh and remind him me doing ALL the finances I got his ass paid last week just not mine. We laugh at our little smack talk and agree to run after my shift. So all day long at work we have been playing around with each other making witty jabs to each other and to our co-workers just hyping it up.

With the back story out of the way, I am on the phone with a lost trucker looking for our warehouse *when I say I do a bit of everything I mean it* My boss walks by points to the clock and I finish helping this guy and we go out side to let our cars warm up.

I sit down once I hit opt temp close my door and shrug my shoulders, my arms sore from helping load 2 trucks today.

We go to a light near by and I reach over my dash and tap my ASR *TC* disabling it. I am greeted by a little light warning me ASR off *time for fun* I have still yet to launch this car and did read up a bit figure i'll sandbag the launch or just reel him in. I look over to a smile and wave waiting for the light to cycle I hear the DOHC mod motors revs climb. My OHV 5.7L does the same around 2500 RPM I figure would be a easy launch waiting for cylce to green, I start praying my 10bolt will hold and i'll not suffer too much frame twist.

Green.

Tires spin both cars seem to have launched calmy on the low side not too much nosie just the howl of the LS1 is all I hear 5.7K rpm I shift into 2nd my Fuzion ZRIs protest and my rear end whines as the tail of the car goes about 3 inches left. I slowly am putting distance on the Maurader as Traction seems to settle back on mid 2nd gear. I short shifted again into 3rd about 5500 rpm still a slight bark from the rear rubber. Winding out to the top of 3rd around 90 I stuff my T56 into 4th. In my mirror I see the old mans cobra is a few lenghts behind. No this isn't good enough hes still on it I know him hes wanting me to bury my speedo somthing I'm not willing but I am willing to take her a wee bit higher on an empty area of highway. 4th gear I let off at around 120 saw in my rear my boss was up to a few bus lenghts by now. I tap my brake lights and then slow to legal speeds. He does the same and jumps behind me.

After our little run we both pull back to the store He is all smiles my heart is racing, and I have a smile that could break my face. He tells me he loved running me and thinks my car is insane to be safe and enjoy it. He also grumbles somthing about calling KB and his is still comfier. He just wants a rematch

Cliffs:
first run of my z28
me vs boss
fun smack talk
even launch
pulled whole race once traction is made
shut down after few bus lenghts.
props to the ride and more fun smack talk

Both cars are stock.

Indeed it will, when I was at the track I only used 1st-3rd gear. I was trapping 104-105mph... right on the verge of maxing 3rd gear.

seriously, when I bought mine... I had just gotten a hair cut. But like 2 weeks later my hair started to grow out fast as hell, especially in the back.

I was like Oh hell no... and got a buzz cut to show my skull who's boss.

Then I looked like a pissed off skinhead in a hick car... not sure what was the worse of the two evils.

Oh well.

Only for you guys that haven't raised your rev limiter :p

Good kill. I'm sure you'll enjoy the LS1. The rearends don't always blow out. I use to have a 00 Z28 on a 100 shot and DR's, and I didn't have a single problem with the rearend. My current WS6 feels like it will need a new ring and pinion gear so i'll put in some 4.10's to cure it :D

Marauders look sweet. They are kinda heavy though. I think they might have the Mach 1 motor in them, but i'm not sure.

No reason to move it up the way it was.
I will be spinning the 402 to about 6650 though.

Indeed it will, when I was at the track I only used 1st-3rd gear. I was trapping 104-105mph... right on the verge of maxing 3rd gear.
I was bouncing off the rev limiter through the traps....105.3 MPH.

Rev limiter is at 6250 on my 1999 TA.

yup those are nice cars, its got a nice motor, although id like to see ford start using the 5.4 more instead of the 4.6 in a lot of cars to compete more with the hemi and ls1/ls2.

Its got a nice motor, its just heavy as shit. Same thing with the Mark VIII which my friend has. Its a real quick car, but its geared for highway and its about 3800lbs.

5.4 liter = Ford GT and GT 500 :evillol:

I disagree with your first statement. Most people try to avoid the 4th gear shift from what i've seen on LS1tech.com The times in my sig are from running towards the top of 3rd. Dunno what the trap speed would've been had I gone into 4th. What rpms did your power die off at on your old setup?

Yeah, but in 6 months I've gone from liking my Z28 to hating it.

For the most part it's a POS chevy.

I should of remembered that when I bought it... :p

I think I'll stick to imports... they may not be as fast in most cases, but at least you know you'll get there. :icon16: :grinno:

question tho, has the camaro been unreliable at all? i thought you just didnt like it for other purposes.

I didn't like it cause the interior design just doesn't fit me... now I hate it cause it took some yahoo's 6 weeks to fix the damn rearend. Which randomly went out right after I replaced the clutch... which had a bad pressure plate and wouldn't hold pressure if you wen't over half throttle or shifted somewhat hard.

Neither of which, convientely enough for my warranty company, was covered by my nifty warranty. So, roughly $1700 later of my own money plus $550 of car payment & insurance I pay a month down the drain for it sitting for a month and a half.

I hate it... if somebody gave me a block of C4 or a hand grenade. You'd probably see a video of me blowededed up my F-Body.

I remember all your troubles with your 240z maybe your just a lil rough on your units. Cars arent made to be driven to 6K at every shift, every time.

well i doubt a bad clutch is his fault, it was probably old anyway, and whoever owned it first probably beat it up, i mean comon its a camaro thats what people do to them.

Likem, what problems did I have with my 240z?

The original L24 ran when I pulled it out, it's in my garage still. Probably would still start up. It would pull to 6000+rpm no problem.

The SR20DET, was a totally different beast. I never had a single mechanical problem with it. I had a bit of 'tuning' issues with it, fuel delivery, once we figured out why it was starving for fuel it ran great... a wiring issue which turned out to be a bad fuse... that I didn't know existed.

I replaced the clutch/flywheel in the SR20DET with a race setup at my own will, the original didn't break.

The car itself was just old, so I got tired of it being old. That's why I sold it... Never had a major problem with it like I had with the Camaro.

Now... me being hard on my cars. I'm actually very easy on my cars, most of the time I just put around town. Heck, in the time I had my Z28... I've had maybe 10 races in 5 months. With only 2 passes down the quarter mile.

That's not a whole lot.

when ur running an lq4 or whatever insanley demonic thing you have done to that car by now. The rearend is well suited for daily driving and will hold up greatly for the average driver in stock applications.

did a search couldnt find what i was looking for, and frankly im pretty tired. But it was something more along the lines of, replacement setup because of necessity because you were on the verge of complete clutch failure.

Nope, what we thought was total clutch failure was a small piece of slave cylinder broke off and kept the clutch from fully operating. I believe it was a $20 part from Nissan. But, at that point I'd already had the new clutch/flyweel for a few days prior to the slave cylinder breaking.

I suppose that was a bit of a problem but since the new parts were already scheduled to go in regardless... I don't see it as such.

EDIT: it was a slowly failing part, don't get me wrong. From time to time, it'd totally not let me shift into 2nd gear if you went WOT and tried to shift fast. It'd just grind and make you look like a fool. It did it to me only twice, and both times there was an audience that got a laugh.

Just like they say, likely hood of looking like a fool is directly proportionate to the amount of people watching. ;)
