LS wont start

My mother has a 2001 LS she has had it for about a year. It has spent much of its life with her, in the shop. About six months ago she started having an intermitent problem starting. this is not the normal long crank time thing. When she turns the key all the normal dash lights, bells andwhistles come on, but the damn thing wont crank, nothing no clicking nothing. After repeated attempts it will work. It dose not seem to be the neutral saftey switch, seeing that playing with shifter gives no immediate joy. Over the last couple months it has become a more frequent problem. The last time it took her better than 30 min. to get it started . any ideas?

Starter solenoid/starter assembly? Have you tried tapping on the starter when the car won't start? Also, have you verified that there is voltage to the starter wire when trying to start?

Also, does your mother have a second key for the car? Maybe the PATS system is not recognizing the key. Does the 'security' light illuminate during the failed start attempts?

Good questions. Starter Solenoid/ starter assembly? if my memory serves me, when there is a problem with either of these you get a distinct clicking and or buzzing sound. as for the voltage at the starter. Unfortunately I have not been around to check this when it happens. the intermitent nature of the problem makes it tough to trace this. I will try to get answers for these questions.
Thanks
