Shifting an Automatic

Anyone else do this with their cavalier? Mine has the 3 speed, and I can shift it even thou it's an automatic. I've been doing it for quite awhile and my friend has been only shifting ever since he bought it 7 months ago and has had NO problems. All you do is let off the gas when you shift. Even thou I don't have a tac, I shift to the speeds and sounds.

It makes my car sound A LOT better and makes it pick up speed at least 2 times faster than it normally would.

NOTE: I'm not responsible for any damages to your car that you do after reading this, lol. :evillol:

your an idiot. Shifting an automatic is so retarded. It doesnt make your car faster, more so your ricer fanatsy is just a little more fulfilled making you believe you are going faster. The computer shifts faster and at better RPMS than you ever will. And even further more, you dont need to take your foot off the gas pedal to shift an automatic. Just manuals. Stop being an idiot and bouncing your poor engine off the rev limiter and let it shift itself.

Come on cut him a break. I have friends who for some reason actually bother with shifting their automatics. I usually just shrug it off. They're all just jealous that I actually KNOW how to drive manual. I'm kidding of course, though some do want me to teach them.

Either get a manual car or let the damn car shift for you! Don't shift the auto....doin that and telling people about it is just asking to be made fun of....

Eh, I could careless. I bet you're all waiting for me to argue back...lol. Immatures. The only reason I don't get a manual is because they SUCK ASS in the winter and I live in the south side of chicago and we get hit badly with ice and snow. If I wanted a manual, I would of bought that porsche a kid tried to sell to me 2 years ago.

But yeah, ANYWAYS.....it gives me better traction and it DOES make the engine sound A LOT better then it does in overdrive.

Besides, I was only asking a question, I never said anything bad to you. So keep your mouth (and fingers) closed unless you have something mature to say about the topic.

I disagree. There is snow on the ground right now and I'm managing very well. Infact when I shift or just push down on the clutch it helps me gain traction. Throwing it into neutral and then tapping the brakes has saved me more than once.

yeah no shit, if anything manuals do better in snow and ice, unless you drive like a dipshit theres no way your gonna spin the tires taking off in second

My god how many times are you going to call someone and idiot. Here is an ideal ask the mods to make a stickie intitled Jayson respond to everything and just post your an idiot in there. I swear that it like the only thing you ever say. For the love of god you make yourself sound like you are almighty god just because you have a supercharged cavalier. Big flippin deal. If he wants to shift his car and screw his tranny up let him. Your not paying for the car, and your not paying for the transmission replacement.

lol i love how everyone always brings up my supercharger and thinks im acting arrogant because i have it. Ive never mention anything about my supercharger or my car.

Face the facts, this guys an idiot. Just another ricer. I hate ricers and i hate them more when the post moronic crap here.

It does not make the car sound any different. WTF do you think happens when the car is in drive and you accelerate? It acclerates in first gear, the same gear it would accelerate in if you manually shifted into 1st gear and punched the gas. So no it doesnt sound any different, its the same gear with the same engine. Only difference is your boucning off the rev limiter. Once again your a moron. Yuu have a 3 speed trans, there is no overdrive gear on the 3 speed. And on the transmissions that do have overdrive, its nothing more than 4th gear. So you dont disable overdrive by manualy shifting. IN ANY CAR EQUIPED WITH OVERDRIVE HARD ACCELERATION WILL AUTOMATICALLY DISABLE IT.

So please stop acting like a ricer, and please dont try an deny the fact that you are in fact a ricer.

Put in a system, tint the windows, buy a spoiler, and change the intake and then see what I have left over and maybe add lights.

wow every ricer mod there is, and the only performance mod would be an intake, which really isnt much of a performance mod at all.

I don't know how having a manual is going to be bad on snow...i can drive a stick so i don't have a problem!

WOW i really hate posting in here because well i see the cavalier as a ricer in any way shape or form. NO offense to anyone but thats my opinion stick with it or shut the fuck up. When it snows up here its usually started off with about an inch of freezing rain and i have driven damn near anything in the snow. Geo metro stick, civic stick, corolla auto and stick, regal auto and my 4x4 blazer auto. One thing i will say first off is that it doesnt matter whether its a 5 speed auto FWD or RWD the weight on the axles is what matters. The regal is almost unstopable in the snow, mainly because it has a 3.8 that weighs like 700lbs. The corolla sucks ass no weight but the 5speed is better. What im getting at is that it doesnt matter unless the car has some weight on the axles. Another thing 4x4 is almost useless unless you have ABS.

As for the "shifting an auto" it will destory the tranny i dont car what anyone says your making the trans do something it supposed to do on its own, in doing so your making the trans pull out of gear to go into another gear with nothing to slow down the inertia created on the flywheel. Its like driving a stick without using the clutch. So yes il agree with jayson your an idiot. Hes also right that the trans will shft better and faster than you ever could mainly since it picks up the rpm and speed to tell it when to shift. Say it shifts at 28mph at 5k rpm from 1st to 2nd your foring the trans to shift either earlier or later than it should there for worst gas milage and worst performance. If you want to rice around acting like your driving a rental car have fun but when you brake trans or a synchro good luck getting it fixed.

and if you really think the weather there is bad, check the weather for Fargo ND for the past week.....that's the shit i've had to drive through for the past week in my Integra...and its a 5 spd.....

If you know how to drive a stick its not that hard to do, but honestly i think you should stop shifting your auto because you're going to wreck something......

Believe me i know the whether where i live is nothing we where lucky to get 20" of snow all winter but it was pretty bad the last few years. Kind of mild this year in the mideast. I will admit i hate the weather in those areas, went to school in PA last year and we cant miss more than 3 days for the whole 8 months there. But it snowed close to 2 feet and driving that in a s10 blazer was kind of scary on the side of a cliff. But your right he will end up fucking something up shifting an auto.

Well here our snow has ice underneath it all.

So does ours. Here we just got another 4 or 5 inches this morning too (Nebraska). Doesn't make a difference. I can slide around as if I am in a sled, but if I push the clutch down and maybe upshift then I usually can get enough traction to do something about a vehicle being infront of me. I've done it acouple of times this week. You can't bash manuals in the snow because they are every bit as good on ice as an auto.

Luckly here in Boise when it snows in the valley it is usually gone the next day. We had 4-5" on Wednesday and by Thursday morning there was nothing.

I'm in Grand Island. It snowed again today, nothing to complain about this time though. I'd say we still have 6 inches on the ground and some of the streets are pretty slick. There's been snow on the ground for a week now. Ridiculous. I hate snow.

That's what I said, on the first page, and after that we discussed handling on the snow. Saying that an auto is better in snow isn't necessarily right, so we kind of were discussing that. If he wants to shift with his auto, that's dandy with me.

I drove my first winter in an auto, my second winter in my 5speed Cavy. manual=WAY better for winter. Plus if you get stuck you can rock the car with fancy clutch/gas work. It isn't good for it but it effective. You can cut all power to the wheels by flickign it in neutral, you can do everything in second to prevent spinning tires and such. winter: manual > auto.

I never clicked on this thread because well it said " shifting an auto "
so i was just like i rather not be mean. But it turns out that a lot of people made some good points. But there are some stuff that i didnt agree with. Now i dont know if you meant this on snow only but 5sps and auto do matter and FWD and RWD matter also. And as for cavalier being ricers just to let you know cars arent ricers, ricers are the drivers. This is what a ricer is " A ricer to mostly every car person is someone who knows absoloutly nothing of their car. Usually a person who TRIES at learning about cars by racing their cars up and
down highways, in and out of traffic, with their loud systems and exhaust tips. The stickers only add to the millions of accessories to modifying the exterior of your car. Wings bodykits, lips, wheels, tons and tons of modifications." and just so you know i have a body kit. Ohh and as for shifting and auto dont do it. If you want higher rpms and shifting faster get a shift kit.

Yeah you are right its not the car thats the ricer its the owner (poor cars), there are the people you stated that have no idea what the hell there doing, and theres the show car "ricers" or tons of body mods that make the car look fast and agressive and the damn thing runs like a slug. Its been a while since ive driven a car ive owned 2 blazers in the last year or so. Current one i have it running high 14's on the stock motor not bad considering tha damn thing ran a 17.3 after i bought it. My goal is to getit running high 13's off of the stock motor N/A. As for the guy bumping his system down the street beeing ricer 9 out of 10 people with a car that have a stereo system are guilty of that. Im not going to lie i have seen some fast cavs and some clean ones but the majority of them in this area are "riced". Then again you get that with any car fast mustang, or a dick head with dual exhaust on a v6 thinking he has the baddest car on the road. Same with hondas, trucks, mitsus, yotas, every car.

As for minding my business i was trying to save the poor kid from paying a grand for a new tranny when he breaks the tranny oil pump or the internalls. If he wants to shift let him but just so you know unless you know what your doing then the motor must come out of the car to replace the tranny and it isnt easy on any car.
