TAIPEI - Residents of Tainan learned a lesson in whale biology after the decomposing remains of a 60-ton sperm whale exploded on a busy street, showering nearby cars and shops with blood and organs and stopping traffic for hours.
The 56-foot-long whale had been on a truck headed for a necropsy by researchers, when gases from internal decay caused its entrails to explode in the southern city of Tainan.
Residents and shop owners wore masks while trying to clean up the spilt blood and entrails.
"What a stinking mess. This blood and other stuff that blew out on the road is disgusting, and the smell is really awful," a BBC News report quoted one Tainan resident as saying.
The whale had died on Jan. 17 after it beached itself on the southwestern coast of the island.
Researchers at the National Cheng Kung University in Tainan said enough of the whale remained to allow for an examination by marine biologists.
Once moved to a nearby nature preserve, the male specimen -- the largest whale ever recorded in Taiwan -- drew the attention of locals because of its large penis, measured at some five feet, the Taipei Times reported.
"More than 100 Tainan city residents, mostly men, have reportedly gone to see the corpse to 'experience' the size of its penis," the newspaper reported.

5 foot penis on a 56 foot animal isnt that big. Thats less then a 1/10 of the length. A 6 foot man would have a 7 inch tallywacker based on that.

Dude.. i'd hate to be the car that was closest to the whale when it went off. Man.. it'd be hard to scrub that crap all off, and I wonder if the smell would stay.

Seeing the pics is disgusting enough...i can't imagine being there when that happened. The last horrible thing I smelled was old differential fluid when my husband was attempting to pull the rear axle off of his Roadmaster...I think that now smells like roses compared to what the whale guts smelled like.

1. I thought whales didn't have penisis because of the way they can mate by having the sperm swim through the ocean water into the female when mating (yes I am in high school and we didnt quite study marine bio yet)
2. That is an awful way of transporting a dead whale...I would expect them to set up a site where teh whale was beached or something like that.

i'm no marine biologist but:
1) no, i thnk the salt water would kill the sperm. plus, they're 5 feet for a reason, lol.
2) I agree with that being a bad way to transport it. atleast cover it with a tarp or something. as for setting up a site right there, i'm sure people want to use that beach, and an outdoor examination isn't good, cuz of scavengers or w/e.

How else you gonna transport a 56 foot (17.2M) dead animal that weighs several tons?
Too bad they waited so long that this happened. If they'd have been a bit quicker they wouldn't have whale guts in the streets.

I agree with you guys on the bad decision on the way they moved the whale. They probally didn't have any other means to move it.
