Ses light-code# P06161

Hi,
I'm new to the forum and working on cars in general. I believe my error- to be(test run at local autozone) a heated oxygen sensor, circuit bank2 sensor2. I have the special socket and a new bosch sensor but am unsure where to locate the old one- being the newbie that i am. my most advanced repair thus far was replacing the fuel filter a few thousand miles back. damn gasoline can really burn a freshly shavened neckline!!!

The details on the truck are 4D 4x4 '98 Tahoe LT 73k miles.

Can anyone explain to me how to locate this bad boy? I also have read that once one sensor goes bad you should replace all of them. can anyone confirm this? and last thing-- i need a good repair manual for the truck-- any recommendations? Thankya

Make sure your sensor has 12v to it and the ground is good, this code means the heater part is not working there is a fuse in this circuit also, may not be the sensor itself at fault.

so make sure the current sensor in there has 12v going to it and that its grounded ?
I still gotta locate this specific sensor--

If you have a sensor on each pipe in front of the cat, it would be the one after the cat, if you have one just before the cat and another one in each of the engine down pipes then it is the one just before the cat. BTW no such code as you posted, must be p0161?

yea code 0161- bad typo. ok i just crawled underneath it and it looks to have 2 catalytic converters both of which run down the passenger side. the first sensor is located under the driverside right before the pipe begins to turn in an L shape and make its way over to the first converter located under passenger seat, one sensor follows right after. the further down convertor(passenger side)on a seperated pipe-has one right infront-and the wire connection leads into a small metal box screwed on to the inner body frame. it also has 1 sensor after. im a bit confused by your post--the problem is with both sensors after the converter(s) since each has one infront? Thanks for helping by the way.. i hope i explained that well.. simply put.. 2 converters-each has 1 infront and one behind.

also once i have identified which sensor--could you explain how to confirm if it has 12v and is ground? how can i locate the fuse u mention to see if its blown? sorry i don't know anything--thats why im here trying to learn

It is the second sensor on the pass. side exhaust pipe, counting from the manifold. If you are not familiar with checking electrical circuits on a car, I suggest you stop here and get help, fuse should be in fuse/relay
box under hood.

thanks maxwedge. im familiar with where the fusebox is located. just haven't ever really looked inside one before so i dont know which fuse to inspect. also i hate to sound exhausting but just to clarify--its the pipe that is located farthest right underneath pass side? (meaning NOT the one that starts under drivers side but turns and begins to run under the pass?)

i found this on autozone under dual catalytic converters--meaning it WOULD be the one that starts under driverside but moves under pass side.

well i checked the relay box.. simply looked in the manual and ENG-1 seemed to be the fuse that the o2 heater was listed under. fuse looked good but i put in a replacement anyway.... so im still not sure which sensor... as mentioned in previous post. there are 2 downstream on the passenger side. 1 behind each converter on separate pipes
