An Odd Co-incidence

Well, I was involved in another accident Monday evening while coming home from work. You'll might remember my last accident back in June with my old white Caprice; this one involved my newly acquired Caprice. Here is a summary:

I was less than a mile from the house on the way home from work. As I rounded a bend that goes the left and then to the right, two dogs (I think they were rotwilers) walked into the road in front of my car. I hit the brakes, sqwealing the tires (my sister heard it all the way back from the house). The Caprice stopped without hitting the dogs (those award-winning police package brakes); however, a minivan hit me from behind. Appearantly, she was following too close and didn't stop in time. Once again, the police ticketed the other party, and the car is sitting at the body shop waiting for an estimate and for the insurance to work out.

If silicon212 or someone else wants to upload the pictures, I'll e-mail the pictures to them.

I'll keep everyone informed of any further developments.

I could do that again if you want.

Here's what happened to my '88 when I T-boned a '90 Accord at 40 -

(hint - the damage was purely cosmetic and cost $300 to fix)

Nah, only $300, it wont be written off. I hope that Accord was f-ed up. The bumper doesnt look like it gave at all... it actually did its job, now adays a newer car would have been close to, if not completely totaled.

The Accord was twisted on its uniframe - the entire back end ripped off and scattered across Val Vista Lane in Gilbert ... :) His car was completely undriveable. I narrowed it from the rear wheelwell back by about a foot. He went airborne and landed partially on the header panel - that's what caused the most damage. That was in March of '03.

Pictures sent. Talked with insurance people for the other party, they said they would pay for the repairs. We will soon see.

No, you're confusing HLandin with me. I'm in Arizona. The car you see is mine, not his, and that damage was from 2003. I had fixed it three weeks after the wreck and you'd never know it was involved in anything. That's the only time I wrecked it, only the second accident I've been involved in in a half-million miles of driving (not all with this car of course), and the wreck was not my fault. The car I wiped out was a white 1990 Honda Accord and it died as a result of being hit with my Chevrolet Battering Ram.

Thankfully, nobody was hurt in the wreck, although my left shoulder was bruised from the impact with the seatbelt, everyone walked. My car was completely driveable, the Gilbert, AZ police refused the other car back on the road due to imminent safety concerns (things like no back end, no tail lights, bent wheels, broken struts, that sort of thing). Of course, it didn't help the guy that I hit that he was driving on a suspended license, either. At least he had insurance on his car - he started the policy on the morning of the day I hit him. The pictures I posted above are the ones that the other guy's insurance company used in their investigation. They wanted to total my car as their estimation was $2500 in damage. I told them to pay for junkyard parts only so they wouldn't total my car. I went down and spent $300 in parts to fix it, got a check for $800. It all worked out in the end.

I had to replace the fender, hood and front bumper ($28 each at Ecology Auto Wrecking) and header panel ($200 at Chi-Town).

NM - They became a victim of the Yahoo spam blocker. I'll get them on the site ASAP.

Edit, Pictures Posted (http://www.silicon212.org/hlandin/)

I was thinking it was cosmetic damage until I saw this picture:

that one there might get the car totaled. Good luck and I hope everything works out!

Insurance hasn't looked at it yet (probably will this week) but they said the body shop said it was a 'partial total' (??).

It can be fixed, given how much money you want to spend on fixing it. I doubt the insurance company will, so you might want to try with them what I did with the other guy's insurance after my wreck, which was to ask the insurance to pay for parts and do the labor yourself.

If you do want to fix it, then you're going to need access to another Caprice (or Impala) between '80 and '90 to donate the back half of the body, and you're also going to need a welder. You'll be cutting off the roof at the tops of the A and B pillars, and then the body inside the car (perhaps from under the driver's seat on back). Do the same to your car, simply swap the bodies (you'll want some friends to help you here) and weld your cuts back together, paint to match and then it will look like it never was wrecked.

Well, looks like I might just buy it back (only $100 dollars less and then sell it High Performance Motors, an ex-polic car shop, to see if they want to use it for anything such as parts like motor, tranny, accessories, etc.).
