Help a girl out...

Ya ya I'm new here...newbie fine w/e u wanna call me I don't care, but i was wondering if anyone could help me out or even be willing to help me out. See I dont know that much about cars, but i'm really into em' and i'm just trying to learn as much as possible. So for starters i was just wondering if anyone could fill me in on the different types of clutches like 3spd and what not and fly wheels. Ayt thanx.

Not tranny related like you are asking, but a VERY impressive mod.
Helps the air spin outta the muffler faster giving you much better performance.

quick answer to your question

in terms of tranny's and clutches there obviously your auto and manually operated...VW has 2 clutches (DSG) that switch back and forth for better shifting...BMW's SMG clutch is electronic I believe

3spd - 6 spd are just the gear sets (with ratios)...if you don't understand just ride your bike again

Well 3 speed trans are about obsolete now almost everything has went to 4 and 5 spd transaxles trans. :grinno:
Clutches have remained the same for a long time.
A dry clutch disk plate with a pressure plate to compress and hold the clutch plate to the flywheel.
And a throwout bearing and a manual fork or a hyduralic slay cylinder to push the throwout bearing against the pressure plate to release the clutch plate.
But way back in the old days they had some wet clutches that ran in oil. They were called fluid drives almost like a automatic trans.
You might get some repair manuals and learn some more about clutches.
Also some repair books on real old cars would be interesting. And yes they had automatic trans way back then to. :biggrin:

Anyway, cargurl... the clutch is the connection between the engine and a manual transmission. Think of it like this. When the engine is running, its always spinning. At the back of the engine is a big steel plate (called the flywheel) that spins with the engine. On the front of the transmission is another big plate (made from a fibrous friction material) about the same size as the flywheel. When you push the clutch pedal to the floor, you are separating those two discs. As you let the clutch pedal out you are allowing them to come together which transfers the power from the engine to the transmission... and then eventually to the wheels.

The transmission is just a collection of gears that (like mason said) is much like your 10-speed bicycle. By moving the gearshift you are causing different size gears to mesh with each other changing the ratios of input speed to output speed. the only main difference is that your bike uses a chain to connect the gears, but a transmission actually meshes the gears together.

The number of available gear ratios in a transmission is no different than a bicycle; its just the multiple of possible gear combinations inside the transmission.

welcome to AF cargurl... like mason said, howstuffworks is a really really good site for you. hell when i first joined AF i didnt know jack about cars, and i went there and just read everything i could. and it will give you a good basic understanding of cars. and they have cool little pictures and movies to show you how things work. other than that just search on the internet... or search on here... and good luck

hahaha sorry luos but i don't agree. i think muffler bearings are nothing but a restriction in the exhuast system. if i were you, i would take them out of your exhuast man.


anyways to get serious. if you haven't figured it out, there are no such things as muffler bearings. however if you want to learn about stuff, like what mason rsx said, start with the basics from howstuffworks.com, then if your into imports then you can start gettin technical and read up tech and project articles on www.sportcompactcarweb.com dont' read super street cause those guys are idiots and even i know more then they do.
