Dyno Day

So it was dyno day today. Unfortunately I got there just after Pete, and Chuck had run their cars....bit strange weather today too.
Chuck ran a very impressive 91.4 KW and Pete 79 KW.
hehehe...and chuck.... I think you're running out of ways to lighten your car :p
there were also 2 other vtir civics...one ran 90KW - just had exhaust, and the other 95 I believe. Too bad about the SIR badge though
I didn't dyno my car, but perhaps next time. It rained a bit here, and there, so the BBQ didn't get going much.
The highlight of the day was probably the two commodores that ran....the red one, had to be strapped down with bolts, and 2 big blokes in the boot...and pulled a impressive 354KW :)
hahaha....and the funniest car to run, was the VW bug, which pulled a massive 25KW :hehehe: (probably still faster then you huh tannee :p - just kidding)

Chuck had to go to work...however Pete and I decided to take the cars for a bit of a drive.... Unfortunately Deb couldn't join us today because of a bad toothache, however after speaking to her, she said weather was bad out her way, so we decided to avoid the mountains....and head south.
So.. we went back through stacey street, back through menai, and onto heathcote rd.
forgot to mention these P platers in a lancer we encountered near lidcombe...driving fast slow...fast slow.... they pulled up on one side next to me, and Pete pulled up the other...I smiled at Pete, and thought gotta teach these kids a lesson. Light went green, I was off, bit of wheel spin, however I nailed them on first, and started backing off when I got to about 90. Pete didn't realise we were running, and by the time he had traction, he caught the lancer in 2nd.
I laughed as we got to Bankstown, the lancer went past...and I saw a look back in appreciation :p
oh, and then this horrible ricey del sol went past.... all you could hear was exhaust, and see big chrome wheels, altezzas, and a big chrome bit on the back of the car....yuck.
hehehe...although Pete also reckons I got him stuck behind a camry on purpose...honest I didn't :p
next when we got to heathcote, this camry went from the right lane, to the left lane and pulled up at the set of lights :p
I wasn't going to risk a camry getting infront, so I lost him at the lights...

next through to waterfall, and we turned off and headed through the national park....
this was a great run today...although bumpy in some sections, and my suspension was getting a workout...we were averaging about 110km most of the time, and having good fun with the corners...
at one section, on the left near this bend were a few cars parked, and this lady getting stuff out of the back of a station wagon....I swear we scared the crap out of her, as we were coming around the bend full speed :p
onto the recently resurfaced part, which was real smooth, and finally out to the final hairpin... bit quick my turn in, and screeched around a bit :p
stopped at stanwell park....and got out of the car...
you could smell the "burnt rubber" smell off the tyres...hehehe

after letting the tyres cool a little, we headed down lawrence henry drive, along the coastline to wollongong. I let pete lead this time, we caught behind some traffic unfortunately, and finallly got to wollongong, headed past south beach to check out if any cars were about...
a few wrx's, and rx7's, a porsche, and a nice celica. Parked near my unit, and then had some coffee.
After this we headed south....along the nice SMOOTH roads to Barrack Point....real nice spot.

As we were just passing windang bridge, I pulled up behind a Nissan Pulsar SSS with number plates "BIZAR" tiger orange coloured, and Pete pulled up behind a GL....light went green.... and we had to tail these two, cause they were driving slow....
got past them, and the next light was red. The pulsar pulled up the inside lane...and I thought....hmmm....he wants to have a go.
Lights went green...my wheels are spinning not getting that much traction....change to second, and I realise the pulsar is miles back, and Pete has to pull in behind me cause of the turning lane...
the pulsar decides to pull on inside lane again....I thought hmm....wants another go huh? lights green...lots of wheel spin...I can hear his, as well as mine....and even though I'm not getting that much traction...I still beat him by miles...as I change into 2nd....REAL BIZARRE :p he had so much trouble just keeping up on 1st....
the other civic was pretty disappointing too....lost him real easy :p
After that, was driving along, and got to another red light, and Pete pulled up beside me, even though I was going to originally turn left there, and I wound the window down and said hey you wanna run.

as I was saying that....light went green....
real bad launch for me....wheels were spinning like crazy, and starting to lose it a little, steering inside, so I backed off a little and changed, was ahead about a car length, and changed however bend coming up, and I knew the lane merges...so pete was catching up...but I didn't want to risk it, so backed off a little...then I realised we got up to about 120 on a 70 road, and its like ok....better slow down now :p
got to barrack point...was real nice, and lots of stars out... after that headed back out to the freeway, and off at Picton rd to head back to sydney.
After turning into Picton rd...hehehe...there is this really nice bend...and yeah....Pete...I disappeared for a while there huh :p

Great run around the bend at about 140k - 150k...passed this commodore, and then slowed down, so pete could catch up :p
rest of picton rd, was a pretty good run...mostly driving about 120k, apart from where the overtaking lanes were, and when we overtook a truck....got up to about 170k...
unfortunately got caught behind a CAMRY! doing 80k...who were switching their high beams on and off....real bad drivers  but got past them soon after...thank god for that :p
and then turned back onto the hume hwy...and drove averaged 130k all the way back to liverpool...hmmmm....most people getting out of my way when they saw me coming up behind :p
A very good days drive.... ok I'm so tired now :p
but great fun..and nice to meet you Chuck :)

if there wasn't soo much traffic this evening in the gong...I'm sure we could have gotten some good runs from the lights, but alas... we didn't get many red lights :p

anyway...I'm still happy about how the car is driving since the cat/flex were changed, and the new tyres are on...
its definitely responding better, and revving quicker than before...even if there is a bit of wheelspin when I push it, its still getting the response on the road, faster than the falkens were.
think the exhaust flow is much better and yes, I know...my muffler is huge :p

So is that all limp home does is drop the rev limiter by 1000. I thought it gave you crappy running and minimal functions?
If you asked (which I did) then they monitored your A/F ratio. Mine was perfect all through the run (well til 7200 of course)
Can anyone tell me what 91Kw is in HP?

about 125ish. Check the 4g forum, Setanta converted it there.
You car is actualy making as much hp as I expect it to.
The Limp home mode does a few things. In my car it lowers the limit to about 7 something, (7200 obviosly) and richens up the fuel mixture quite a bit.
Iv heard it also disables VTEC, but im not actualy to sure on this, as Iv only had it go into limp mode once when I got a bit carried away going a bit hard on a long up hill corner with a low oil level.
One minute I was pulling 7900rpm in 2nd with all 4 tyres squeeling, and the next the car was bouncing of the limiter, I had no VTEC. The ECU shut it off with the loss of oil pressure and then entered limp mode and lowered the rev limit.
But you should be getting peak hp at about 7,800rpm, so if you made 125hp at only 7,200rpm then you might yet have another maybe 6-7hp tucked away in there. :D

Yeah, mixtures were perfect and VTEC isn't up to the computer anymore :D.
The graph hits a cliff at 7200 so I figure there are a few ponies hiding somewhere :D
Was gonna drag it tommorrow night but if it's in limp......oh what the hell, the mixtures are right and at least I won't over rev it :D

Does it simply stop making hp at 7,200 or does it actualy hit the limiter?
Thier both quite differnt things, and could be caused by differnt problems.
(all related to your swap)
and what are you useing to control the VTEC?

No it definitely hit the limiter. You could hear it BAD. HP line goes vertical straight down and A/F spikes big time.
I'm using a Autometer shift module that is supposed to actuate a remote shift light but I've got it operating my VTEC. Simply change the chip to change the revs (or as I do change the cyl. I've got a 3000 chip but the switch is on 6 cyl so VTEC comes in at 4500)
I'm gonna havta redo the wiring in the coming weeks as its logging a TDC code and a VSS code. Not suprising seeing tho I aint got a VSS sender :D

Well the TDC code could be enough to fug up the ECU and make it run a lower Limiter point, but the VSS shouldnt effect it.
However it is important that you do find a way to hook one up. Easiest soulution is to fit a later dash from a VTi-R Civic, or even pinch Petes when he's not looking. (with his hp he dosnt need it anyway).
And 4,500 is to low. it whould be 4,800 minimum. 5,000rpm is best if your not letting the ECU do it.
But it might also be a good idea to check all the wring from the tach etc.
The limiter is ment to come in at 8,200rpm. So its coming in exactly 1,000rpm to low.
Prehaps a faulty conection somewhere? or something causing the ECU to think your doing a 1000rpm more than you really are?

What tacho? I don't have a tacho.
Why is it important to run VSS if it doesn't send the computer into limp?
I swapped the ECU and dizzy to try and get rid of the TDC code with no luck. It must be in the wiring? I didddn't do the wiring on my conversion but I will be redoing it :(
I was gonna run the 5000 pill but after seeing my dyno graph I'm happy with 4500. I suppose every setup is different?

alot of ppl reckon that having an adjustable vtec controller is a waste of money...
they say that the honda engineers have it at 5000-5600rpm is the best spot...
mines at 5600rpm (vtec light says so..:D)...
u said something about having the shift light set on v6?? y dont u just put it to 4cyl mode??.. isst cos u dont have the higher rpm pills??... ive got 7000-7800 rpm pills 4 sale except for the 7600rpm.. <--- thats where i love shifting hehehe  ..... plus i heard that vtec peak is at 7800 rpm so 7600 gives me enough time to shift right on 7800rpm
so what are the dyno power runs exactly??.. do u just floor the car in 1st gear??..

vtec controllers would be better for cars that run different ECU's to stock. this is why I took mine out, as I have a stock ECU.
they go through the gears...if they left it in 1st and floored it, they would probably do damage.

The 1st gen B16a's run milder cams to the 2nd gen ones, hence the 10hp differnce.
As a result the change ocer occurs a bit lower, in my cars its anywhere from 4,800rpm to 5,200rpm depending on engine load, vechile speed and RPM.
4,500 is a little low, and when acclerating from lower RPM there will be a slight drop in hp and torque.
B16a4me you would be better off hooking up a VSS to the ECU getting rid of your controller.
The ECU needs a signal from the VSS to engage VTEC, and if your engine is relativly stock (which yours is) then the factory ECU really does do the best possibly job.
How much do you know about how the b16a was wired into your car?
Becauses the fault could be anywhere. but start where there was most likely to have been a mistake made.
EIther the the engine end, prehaps a faulty or misconeccted earth. (make sure the head and rocker cover are both earth to the chassis, as well as the block).
Or at the ECU end, make sure al the pins in the plug are in the right place and properly connected.

Moppie - I have a feeling the cat and the exhaust are my major issues (not to mention my A/F mix being rooted due to idle issues/rich mixture).
Note in generl: VTEC controllers are shit unless you change cam profiles and I/H/E etc. On a stock motor, they ruin the torque curve which should be flat. ;)
I will correct Q's account of the day in a little while - especially the camry/runs of the lights etc - we all know the SiR is faster :p
well, maybe not - but even 10KW down on B16A4ME's 3G, it wasn't going to back off from Q BABY at all ;)

Well then must be time to remove that cat! or jsut gut it.
I know mine must getting pretty clogged. the car dosnt seem to have the pep it used to.
and I jsut remembered there still an idle screw sitting in the door pocket of my car! (cowered under desk)
You should have reminded me about it!
