OK, im using a friends comp to type this message. I had turned my computer off for the first time in months. I tried to turn it on the next morning and...nothing. It goes to the screen where it shows the brand/processor and just freezes. I cant press any buttons. Not F8, F1,nothing. I think its the HD. Soe bald guy at radio shack told me to just replace the whole thing but i cant afford it. Help is greatly appriciated....thanks

Take the BIOS battery out for a minute, and put it back in and turn it on. This will reset the BIOS.

Let us know what happens, and we can keep troubleshooting.

You are still getting power, which is good, it could be your motherboard.

Open your case and somewhere on your motherboard is a round silver battery that looks like a larger version of a watch battery. This is the BIOS battery.

If you have NFI what you're doing, I strongly recommend getting a computer tech to look at it, as you could make any problem worse.

A flakey HDD, CDROM or power supply can cause these problems, also...

I thought about bios, but it was fine before he turned it off. Did you try to boot from windows xp CD? Lmk, good luck man.

If you would've said "little watch battery looking thing, " I would have know what you were talking about...lol. I didnt know the name of the part. I'll try it later when I get home. The hard drive doesn't make any of the noises it usually did when it was starting up. And yes, I tried to boot it from the disks, and it wouldn't load the disks up. Thanks again, later

Got any other old HD's to test it with? You have bad luck with hard drives..

I took the BIOS battery out. It worked somewhat. It'll get past the first screen now and try to boot from the disk, but it wont detect the HD. So I'm guessing the HD is just shot.

OK, thanks. I wrote down the info for that HD and am going to Panama City today shopping for a new one. I have my old HD and the cable that hooks it to the MoBo so I wont make any mistakes picking one out. Thanks again

I spoke too soon. It started doing the same thing with the new HD. I guess it got around it by BIOS not detecting a HD. I disconnected the HD and started it up again so bios wouldnt detect it and reinstalled the factory settings on it. Motherboard perhaps? Could anyone recomend a good one? It needs at least one PCI slot (video card) two 184 pin DDR ram slots, a 478 pin proc socket, and preferably integrated sound. Thanks again.

Did the new hard drive come with a new IDE cable?

And also for sound, usually integrated sound sucks. If your getting one with integrated sound, deffinently read some reviews. For your needs, you can get a new motherboard for pretty cheap.

Yep, it came with a new cable. I'm using it. I guess I'll just leave my comp on stand by like i used to. I want integrated sound temporarily. One less thing to use guitar money on... When're you gonna be on AIM? I just now got it working right again.
