99 explorer trans. problems

our explorer is experiencing trans. slip on occasions. More when cold. Mechanic has recommended rebuilt trans. @ $3500. His Opinion overhauling is not worth the trouble, will fail again. Vehicle only has 78,000 miles. Any suggestions?

Has it ever beeen serviced and the trans checked out? Or did they just say replace it?
Also on price call ford dealer and price out a ford factory rebuilt.

If the fluid has been serviced in the past, I suspect the tranny is going out on you. If it WAS serviced recently, I suspect the wrong fliud (check the owners manual). If you don't think it has ever been serviced, shame! I guess I would just drop the pan and replace filter and fluid. You have the option of doing a flush and fill, but you risk dislodging some crud, could kill it for sure.
