'92 Ignition problem...

Hi,
So I went out to start my car this morning for work. Put the key in, turned, it started, but when I let go of the key, it snaps back somewhat to the aux position, where the lights stay on and radio, etc. I did it again, same thing. I tried to take my key out, I couldn't. Not even Hulk himself could get this thing out. It's jammed for some reason in there. I can start it, hold it, and it stays running. About a year and a half ago someone tried to steal it, jimmed the ignition, but they only really broke off a piece of the black plastic that surrounds the actual ignition. worked fine all since then till now.
Do you guys have any suggestions on a fix for this, besides I know a new ignition. I dont want to drive down the city to get it fixed holding the ignition, and accidently letting go of the key and the steering column locking up and hitting somebody. Explain that to the police...
Any help, walk arounds would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks

ok, I understand its the ignition cylinder, i cant see it being the actual ignition switch. The cylinder is where the key goes, right?
Also, is there any walkthroughs to doing this on my own? Thanks.

I changed the ingition switch on my 92 because it would stall for no apparent reason, but I didn't mess with the cylinder. I theory, you could pull the steering wheel with a puller and remove the switch. then you could start it or maybe see where the damage is to the cylinder.
If the cops stop you , and you are driving around with the column torn apart you would have some splaining to do.
It take some specialty tools to remove the switch too.

When they key in my old cav started sticking, I figured out it was something goofy between the shifter which prevents the key from being removed unless in Park and the cylinder. The easiest way for me to get around this was to park the car, shift into first, then back into park. The key always came out after that.
