Lifter Replacement

Does anyone know where i can find a manual to replace the lifters, push rods, and rocker arms online?

The best thing I can tell you to do is to purchase a chiltons or haynes manual. You can go to the expense of purchasing a factory service manual as they are the most detailed. Most manuals can be purchased at Amazon.com or search the net for factory service manuals. I know this is not the answer you were looking for but I really don't know of any online manuals that are available.

I agree with Lynn (GTPDad) about getting some form of reference manual. But you may find that no manuals out there that are going to be the ultimate answer on getting this type of job done easily. There is no substitute for knowledge and experience. Before doing a job like this DIY, make sure you know what you are doing and feel confident you can do the work.

To give you an idea of the work involved here's a link from ClubMed (ClubGP) involving a rocker mod to an L36 (NA Series II 3800). The process for a L67 is very similar. The key to the whole operation is getting the valve covers off and getting access to the valvetrain.

Not only an expensive project but very time consuming and tedious. Here's a breakdown of a Series II 3800 top end. I'm pointing this out because a roller rocker and the pushrod job is one thing but I believe you mentioned replacing the lifters. That will require removal of the supercharger and lower intake manifold, etc.

My next mod project is installing SLP 1.8 roller rockers and pushrods so I have been doing a lot of research on it.

GM service manuals are wonderful if you plan on keeping the car a long time. They are expensive, but contain WAY more info than any Chiltons or Haynes manual. The advantage to GM service manuals is that they cover your specific year, and come in 3 volumes, each thicker than the Haynes or Chiltons manuals that cover a big range of years (as a side note, the Haynes for the Grand Prix only covers through 1999) For the novice mechanic though, the GM manuals can be a little intimidating, almost too much information.

The problem with Haynes or Chiltons books is they are too generalized and not model specific. On the flip side the GM service manuals are great but complex because they are written for a trained and experienced auto tech or mechanic - (the Mr. Goodwrench types). When it comes to major mechanical engine work even the GM manuals leave a lot to be desired.

Autozone has excellent Repair Info help but that doesn't help because most of the info only covers '96 and older Grand Prixs. Again their info is too generalized at times.

Like any reference material they are intended as guides and not a substitute for proper training and experience. Plus there is no service manual whether on-line or hard copy that is going to protect you from Murphy's law (what can go wrong, will go wrong).

yeah i'm hoping that it is not the lifter myself. i was thinking of doing the roller rocker update myself later.
