problem with MTX tranny I Think 92 TOPAZ!

hi, my brother has a 92 mercury topaz,,MTX just recenlty when you shift into gear you have to get the RPM's above 3000 for it to move.... you can take your foot right off of the clutch and it barley moves... any ideas on what the problem is.. i beleive it is a 2.3l
