I'm sure you could but If you plan on doin some serious off roading then you wil be cutting it close when goin over some big bumps. i had 31s with a 3inch suspension lift and still maaged to bottom out a few times, i did do some stupid things though, but u should be fine as long as u don't get any air :)

depending on whther its pre or post 97 model (still not much difference) you can physically fit 31s on a 2in. But they WILL rub when you flex (turn the wheel all the way) or if you do offroading. I would just stick 30x9.5s on it, and have plenty of room and no drag. Thats what i have and I contemplated forever between 30x9.5s and 31x10.5s, 30s were definately the right choice, good luck. If you want to trim your fenders then 31s will fit fine, but most people dont want to cut up their jeep.

They will definately fit but without adding longer bumpstops, they will rub when the suspension is compressed. They may also rub the lower control arms in the front when you turn. If that bothers you, just add a washer or two under the steering stop bolt.
If your getting full compression out of your suspension and not hindered by shock travel, antiaway bars or stiff springs, 31s will rub with any amount of lift (within reason) because you have the same bumpstops bottoming out on the same axle tube (rear) or spring mount(front). Most people that say they dont rub with tires larger than 30s are bottoming out somewhere, usually shocks.
The key is extended bumpstops or wheel well trimming.

dycksonjl -

My first XJ had 30X9.5's on it and I thought they were great. They handled good, mileage wasn't bad, and with the 2" lift, they had just the right 'look'. I always wanted bigger though, thought the 31X10.5's would somehow make me a better person... Didn't get the chance, that XJ was totaled.

The XJ I just bought came with Bushwacker Cutout Flares and 5+ inches of lift, and along with it - General Grabber MT 31X10.5 tires. YEAH BABY! YEAH!

Or so I thought... first, the XJ does look awsome with the bigger tires, and it does climb like a mountain goat. That's about the extent of the positives. The bigger tires have a very negative effect on mileage (I'm getting around 14mpg  ) The 31's also tend to float in the snow, and generally handle strange. I've taken the last 1.5 inches out of the lift, now at about 4in, to help with steering linkage and drive line angles which did help a lot. BUT, I'm thinking that for the winter months at least I'm going to put 30X9.5's on it.

Like the others said, you risk rubbing with the 31's, it's amazing to me how much bigger they really are. So I guess it's up to you to decide why you want them, but if you're going with moderate lift and standard fender flares, I'd stay at the 30 inch tires. :2cents:
