noise when accelerating????

i have an 86 Iroc, 5.0L 305, and whenever i push down on the gas pedal there is a kinda ticking noise and it sounds like its coming from behind the gauges could this be a vacuum leak or what ??????

are you sure it doesnt do it at idle too?
i know the 305's have some problem with the manifold or something that will cause the ticking sound.
I know my friends caprice is like this.

if it does it at idle it is alot harder to hear....when accelerating i can hear it very easily

Just a thought here, I'm not real familiar with 3rd gens. If the guages are mechanical and not electronic it may be one of the cables. If the sound seems relative to road speed especially, I'd check the speedo cable. Does the speedo needle bounce or jump or is it a nice smooth sweep?

3rd gen gauges are terrible, even a non modified drivetrain is going to have some jump in the speedo up thru 5-10mph. tach too. the temp needles get stuck in the dash pod and battery guage is usually in the parking lot of the ball park.

i have a fairly good idea of what this mite be.. i have an 85' with the 305 and i had the same problem... it mite be different with yours but the ticking sound was a shot gasket on one of my headers.... so check that out

Could be a small leak in the exhaust manifold gasket or donut.
Might just be noisy valves... try some LUCAS fuel treatment :grinyes:
