this thing is driving me nuts, I've replaced the cluster, not a horrible job, then yesterday spent 3 hours working on the Vehicle speed sensor, get the whole thing back together and take the rig down the road and the speedometer is clicking and bouncing all over the place. Very frustated, any ideas would be appreciated. Must be the cable or the gear inside of the tranny right?
thanks

hey guys no ideas, well it seems to get a little better when the thing warms up, but by no means is it fixed. good thing its my old ladys car and not a customer. this job would have killed me. Stumped by a speedometer. extremely frustrated.

I had the same thing - I replaced the cable and that stopped it. possible you have a worn cable sheath also.

I have the same problem- seems common-
Could you elaborate a little bit on what you did to fix the problem- Just outline the steps- I would like to tinker with it myself-
Thanks!

Sorry I've been on the chevy forum, have an issue with a blazer. the taurus 95 with 125k is a great runner but there was a clicking a bouncing speedometer. pulled the VSS reach it from the top of motor, and pulled the speedometer cluster out. I've done both of these jobs already trying to trouble shoot the problem. 4 bolts hold the steering colum up so pop those out drop colum and pull out just the speedometer enough to reach cable. back out vss with 10mm bolt and detach cable at that end. attach
new cable and on vss reattach to tranny and fish cable through fire wall and back into cluster. Job sounds alot worse than it really is. 4 bolts on colum plus 10mm vss bolt and some dash board trim will allow you to get this rig back on the road. disconnect battery so you don't deploy air bag. let me know if you need more explanation. found all parts for this job used off of junk yard dog. com sick site always find the parts i need cheap
thanks

I'd like to know how long the speedometer cable is.
I have a 95 Taurus GL 3.0 V6, AX4S trans. It has a mechanical cable (that I drove too far past 85mph with 204k miles on the factory cable .... It's no good above 45mph)
When I was looking up a replacement cable, i was given an option for lenth anywhere from 11" to 120"
I belive the CA-3053 36" is the correct one, but i want to find out for sure.

You could pick up a universal cable that you cut to length, then glue the end on that drives the speedometer.
However, if it works up to 45mph, why do you suspect the cable is the issue rather than the speedometer itself? Typically the cables will break, and it's usually a clean break, so they won't work at all. They may flicker a bit, but that's about it.

I think it's binding more then broken, I can hear the noise it's making when it jumps around. Sounds like it stops for a sec then it all catches up and spins real fast, over and over, for any speed over 45mph. I'm going to buy the 36" cable some time this week.

You could try disconnecting the speedometer cable from the speedometer head and see if you still hear the noise. If not, the problem may not be your cable.
Does the odometer seem to fluctuate as well, or remain smooth? I realize this could be pretty difficult to detect unless you get up to triple-digit speeds, which I certainly am not recommending.
