Audio Help Needed

I have a '98 GTP with the 8-speaker system and I am wanting to install an amp and subwoofer without dealing with the head-unit. I read on clubgp that there is an internal corossover in the rear speakers that just needs to be hooked up to a line-level converter and I will be good to go. My question is if the premium sound system is the same way or if I need to do something special and will it mess with the steering wheel controls at all? Thanks in advance for any help.

IF you are tapping into the speaker leads to send the signal to the aftermarket amp, then there is a difference. In the 8 speaker system, the rear speakers are split so low frequencies go to the 6x9, and high frequencies to the smaller speaker.

after messing with my speakers some (no aftermarket amp or sub yet), when I fade to the rear, all I hear is faint treble. I find it hard to believe that the speakers are blown so would that mean the amp is dead?

If they are factory speakers, it's highly LIKELY that the speakers are blown. The speakers have a much higher failure rate than the amps do.

will do

What the easiest way to test whether it is the speakers or the amp? right now all I get is treble so I am guessing that either the amp isn't sending low freqs to the speakers or the 6x9's are shot.

For about $6 (I got mine at Best Buy) you can buy a harness that plugs into your factory speaker wiring to hook up aftermarket speakers. You can reach the wires from in the trunk, so you don't have to diassemble the rear seat just to test.
