Baby pictures: Lamborghini engineers beginning to put next car through its paces

Lamborghini engineers are starting to run the company’s next two-seat sports car through its paces in preparation for its debut at the Geneva show next March. The L140, still without a name but known in some circles as “Stella,” goes on sale in May 2003.

Intended to compete with the Ferrari 360 Modena and Porsche GT2, the L140 will sticker at $165,000 to $180,000 (AW, May 20). We’re told we can expect Audi-level quality in the L140 (Audi bought Automobili Lamborghini in 1998).

The L140’s 500-hp 5.0-liter V10 was engineered and will be built in Lamborghini’s Sant’Agata plant, near Bologna, Italy, where the car will be assembled. The engine is coupled to a manual six-speed gearbox, sending the power to a permanent four-wheel-drive system fitted with electronic stability control. All that to push a car that weighs in at slightly more than 3000 pounds, thanks to an aluminum spaceframe and body panels.

Production of the L140 for 2003 will be 800-850 units, with a future goal of 1300 cars per year, as part of an investment plan that includes the Murciélago unveiled in September 2002.

Even heavily disguised, these first-ever spy shots give us a good look at the Italian maker’s “baby Lambo,” Lamborghini’s L140 prototype.
