95 Alternator Pulley

On the way home from work on Wednesday, I noticed a growling sound that was increasing from under the hood. It was directly releated to engine RPM's, so the initial thought of tranmission, CV joints went away. After getting home and looking it over, I discovered that the nut that holds the pulley on the alternator was gone and that the loose pulley was the source of the noise.

Does anyone have any idea what size nut this is?

The local parts store did not have a clue and did not have any blister pack nuts that were even close to the size needed. I hate to blow $100.00 on another alternator for a lousy nut.

I don't know the size but yuoui might try a junk yard or a shop that rebuilds alternators.

I've never heard of this happening before. I believe those are self locking nuts. If yhey are self locking and you get a used one then put some Loc-Tite on it.

Was the pulley loose? Must have been for it to make noise. You might want to take the pulley off and have a good look at it. Some pulleys have a 'key' in them and your's could be gone or chewed up.

Afterthought: If the pulley is NOT loose then there's no reason for it to be making noise. My problem was with the pulley on the belt tensioner.

Bone yard or dealer or repair shop should have some nuts.
Also parts places usually have some old calternator cores that they could take a nut off.
But if the nut came off you may have some other problems that cause it to come off.

The nut is a M16 x 1.5 metric. Got one at a nut & bolt supply company. It seems that the 1.5 pitch is an odd size , as they had tons of M16 x 2.00, but only ONE of the 1.5, which I promplty aquired.

FYI for anyone else who may have this problem in the future.

Thanks for the replies.
