I have a 99 gst I am looking to invest in an exhaust system and want to know which exhaust system will yield the most horsepower gain for my car.

any aftermarket exhaust....go to a local shop and get a custom mandrel bent exhaust.

What kind of muffler should I get put on the end of the piping? I don't want anything that is going to sound like a honda's fart tip.

I doubt that any brand of exhaust is really going to get you more power, the extra cash is paying for the name. My friend Mike has a megan racing down pipe and catback, both of which fit great and sound good. I'd just get any "straight through" muffler. To me, there isnt any difference except some money. Obviously some are POS, but just about anything should do you fine. I dont know how much (if any) variation there is between sounds of different mufflers, but a 3" exhaust shouldnt sound like a Honda. Mikes car has a pretty deep tone comapared to any other car up here. Also, from our experience the 3" was quieter. He had a catless stock exhaust with a goofy gutted stock muffler and it was pretty loud. He exhaust now is pretty much the exact same as how we got it, but now its just wider diameter and LOTS less bends (the new catback has 1 bend) and it sounds lots better.

Go with a megan DP extended for no cat if u can and a tsuedo exhaust. I have both 3" and they sound very deep and powerful.
