I have a 2001 GA with piston slap/rod knock it's been like that for a while but lately it's been more noticeable. Louder when cold but quieter when hot.

I don't know when it's gonna GO (my engine) I don't want to be on the freeway or in an unsafe spot.

My question is...what happens..does it blow up, does it just stop what kind of reaction does my car make once the engine dies.

I am still financing the car...and I know it isn't worth crap now. I am thinking of just donating it to a junkyard once it dies.

donate hell! Sell it off or trade it in, but I wouldnt giv it away. What engine you hav, the 4cyl ? What kind of noise does it make and what rpms?

If the piston ceases up it stops, there for the engine just stops, you wont hav power steering btw. but IF u are pulling 6k rpms on a hard pull, it could put a part or two through the engine block. That might make alittle noise, hahaha. Sorry, i couldnt help myself.

You can buy a new'r engine for pretty cheap, i just wouldnt junk it unless the car overall has just had it, a pos. Good Luck

I have a 4cylinder 2.4 liter. The sound is a knock sound that goes faster or slower according to the rev or crank. I shoped around for an engine and they quote me atleast 3600.00...i still owe over 4000.00 on the car :disappoin

I can't sell this car in good faith knowing that the buyer will get screwed, unless he or she is a mechanic and they want to fix it. The car runs fine now just like the day I got it but the noise is like a ticking time bomb as someone mentioned here.

3600 for a quad? Sounds a little high to me. I've seen them sell for around $1200 here used and 600-1000 to install, depends on the mechanic, stay away from the dealerships.

ya 3600$ is a bit much. you could buy a new rebuilt for that much - head/access. You should hav it looked at, if it was just a simple thing like cam bearings or another cheap fix, it would be nice to kknow for sure.

Try this place: cherry-auto.com if you need an engine they can find you one that meets your criteria for much less. Sure it is used but it is a lot cheaper and they will sell you a warranty. You will still have to pay to get it installed but it's a lot cheaper than the ones you have found.

The engines should be the same from 2000 to 01 especially since they are the same size. If you want to see what years will fit you can search car-part.com which is local wrecking yards all over the US. When you do a search it will pull up engines from most years that will fit directly into your vehicle.

Oops, be careful about that blanket "fit directly" statement. I agree almost. For instance a 2001 will fit into a '96 with no problem and vice versa. But, the knock sensors are different (2 wire vs 1 wire and thread size difference which will require block threading or jury rigging) and you have to swap other sensors also. Swapping sensors is not a problem other than the knock sensor though. I agree with "go to car-part.com" but if you want to make sure it is an "exact drop-in" then go to autozone.com or advanceautoparts.com or some other parts shop site and check out the various sensor part numbers. If they match then it is a "drop-in". If they don't then probably all you have to do is swap them (other than the knock sensor of course). Last, you may have to swap the upper motor mount bracket to engine plate depending if it was a A/T or M/T. But this is not a problem either. Just an FYI...
