You need to replace your water pump. Remove the serpentine belt and rock the water pump pulley from side to side and rotate it a bit. Chances are you'll find the bearings have gone out.

It could also be the power steering pump. Could the growl sound also be described as a moan?

yes i could be described as a moan, but PS pump is full and appears to operate normaly, it also does not seem to change in sound when turning wheels and accelerateing. new pump is 25 bucks so i am going to replace it, cant hurt just hope it works.. :smokin:

Have you had someone run the motor, turn the wheels to load the power steering pump, change the transmission through the gears, turn on the rear window defog and other electrical items to load the alternator while you listened around the motor?
Is it possibly an idle pulley?
Next step take off serpentine belt and test each pulley and item.
Is it safe to run the motor for a short time-seconds-without the serpentine belt on??? To see if it's in the motor and transmissions rather than an accessory?

Where did you find a power steering pump for 25 bucks? All I have seen range from $65-115.00 remanufactured!

Auto trainy, thanks for the compliment on the old "road hog". The PA was bought four years ago with 125K on it. It was a non-smoking one owner, clean Carfax and in immaculate condition. I use it for daily commutes (10 miles), to save my other cars, however it washed & vacuumed twice a week whether it needs it or not. (My friend owns the drive through car wash). It is a work in progress restoring to new condition, however, very dependable. Since I have owned it, I never had to drive my weekend cars in the rain! I guess you could call it my rain car!

no the water pump is 25 bucks, i have no idea what the PS goes for, and have not had time to check all the suggestions but i do know that no matter how much draw i put on the alternator the sound does not change so i think i can rule out the ALT

well ended up replacing the alternator, it had a little bit of a scrolling sound in the rear of it, checked water pump was tight and quite, but still had the noise, after test driving it with new alt, i felt all the pullys, it would appear the AC pump bearings have gone out, was very hot to the touch. anyone know if i can just replace the pump or has it contaminated the entire system?????

could be the pulley bearing in the a/c compressor?

could be but according to the parts store they dont sell the bearing alone, so have to get a new pump, but in order to get the warrenty with it i have to buy a condencer and drier and expantion valve, about $500.00 bucks all together.
