Hello guys, any idea what was changed in the 2006 4200 to get the extra 16 horsepower ?

Love my 05 Trailblazer, and looking forward to posting alot here, as I have several interesting questions/topics.

I'm not sure if this did it, but GM and several other automakers just switched over to the brand new SAE Certified standards, creating horsepower descrepencies with previous years. All the crappy jap cars lost several hp, while most american cars gained several rated horsepower.

strange how the "jap" engines lost power...

I thought I read somewhere that they added variable valve lift? but maybe not.

how much power can they make out of this engine; I just bought an Ascender with it and I have never been a big fan of GM engines. BUT man this thing is 1000x better then any Japanese automaker it has power at just about every rpm and sooo smooth.

They did a lot of things to get the extra 16hp, unfortunately it isnt just a PCM reflash.

I am not sure exactly where the additional HP came from, but the additional HP is not due to the new SAE standards. GM said they made several changes to the 2006 model to add additional HP, the most in it's class at 291. For example, the H3 (also a GM product) only puts out 220 HP. The optional V8 on the Trailblazer only puts out an additional 9 HP (300 HP). For the additional price and loss in gas mileage, I think the new V6 is the obvious choice.

I just picked up a 2006 Trailblazer LS and couldn't be happier with the performance. ;)

I know that, that is why I said it isnt just a PCM reflash or the new standards coming into play. GM changed the compression, updated the lifters, and did some other minor things to the internals to get the extra 16hp from it.
Unfortunately, even with all of the changes, the TQ output is the same and that is where the 5.3L V8 beats the I6. It puts out 330TQ, where the I6 only has 277. And, the 5.3L V8 gets almost the exact same mileage as the I6, the 2005 and 2006 models have DOD (Displacement on Demand) which at any time only 4 of the 8 cylinders have gas in them and will be producing power. The fuel efficiency gained by the V8 with DOD is about 7-8%, and that puts it on-par (within 1mpg) of the I6 mileage.
Dont get me wrong here, I love the I6 smoothness and power, but I tow enough that if I were to get another TB today (besides an SS), I would get the 5.3L V8 because of the extra torque. But, if I were to really get another TB today, it would be an SS with the LS2 6.0L V8. So, there are 2 optional V8s for the TBs. (Aand it is is an I6 [or L6 if you want to get technical], not a V6.)
