Acrylic paint?

Hi guys!

I just got my airbrush and now I am looking for some paint. There is only one hobby shop where I live and they only sell Tamiya Acrylic Paint and it's expensive... Can I use another type of acrylic paint, like those that they sell in artist shop? The price are low and I was wandering if it's ok. How do I thin this paint? What I need to use?

You can use any type of paint you would like. That's the good thing about having an airbrush! Just take in account a few factors such as durability, glossiness, workability, etc. . .

Hobby paints are formulated to take all of this in account and while they may be expensive, they're worth the extra money in the long run. . .

Best to experiment and then some! See what works best for you and perhaps you may come across a medium that kicks butt! Then you can share it with the rest of the forum! :lol:

'zactly what Lambo003 said. You can use whatever you want, but hobby paints are well formulated for models. They can be expensive, but I love using Tamiya acrylics with an airbrush. They behave best when sprayed, and cleanup is really easy. Just use Windex, or similar glass cleaner. Windex also works well to thin acrylics.

The problem with any other acrylic paint from any artists shop is that it will be probably designed to work with brushes, not airbrushes. The grain of the paint will be too much thick and you will probably have problems with the airbrush, it will get obstructed easily. It happens with Vallejo Acrylics, for example.

I think that it doesn't matter how much paints you try, at the end you'll try some modelling designed paint and you'll stick with them. So I think that you should go with Tamiya, if you get them easily. Other paints will give you problems and that will not be worth the diference in money.

Here in Spain Gunze Sangyo paints are cheaper than tamiya ones, perhaps you could try to find them or order them from another shop.

I'm not agree when people said that: often I love use Tamy, Gunze and some other kind of acrylics trought airbrush on my models, also I used AB for illustrations from long time: on arts supply shop you could fin a lot of brand of acrylics, some cheap and some others various time expencive than Tamy stuffs: it's depend by resin/pigment quality. Keep an airbrush manual/book and you can see a lot of master at works with acrilics: I think those people done a reach choise for his goods.
However I like use Tamy, Vallejo, Gunze, Lifecolor and fantastics GSI aqueous hobby colors on my models:smile:

Yeah, too bad I can't get paint like Gunze Sangyo where I live. I think I will try some artist paint to see the result by myself, but I will probably stay with tamiya paint.
Is it possible to order paint like Vallejo, Gunze, Lifecolor and fantastics GSI from somewhere if I live in Canada?
