I'm starting now to save for an engine swap in my 96 Civic Cx hatch and am having a difficult time trying to decide between a crvtec and a b18c. The B18c is $3300 with engine, tranny, ecu and assorted little things. The b20b longblock is 799 at hondamotorsonline. So in addition I would need a gsr tranny, ecu, b16 head, vtec conversion kit, eagle rods, and je pistons. So the breakdown goes....
B18c B20b/Crvtec
Engine Engine.....799
Tranny Gsr Tranny..600
ECU Gsr ECU......200
Mounts B16a head...500
3300 Conversion kit....100
Eagle rods ......500
JE psitons.......500 Total= 3199
I would figure in about 200-300 extra for any swap for misc.
Oh and I wouldn't forget about the vtec oil pump. Also could I just buy the b20b and use a ls ecu with the gsr tranny or would the tranny be geared too short. I'm figuring with the b20 I at least get an engine upgrade quicker and then build on it as time goes. Whats your opinion?

wait......are you taking about jdm b18c?......the gs-r motor rite?.....cuz the b18c-r costs like at LEAST 5 grand w/o installation.....personally....if i had the cash....i'd do a crvtec just because the displacement = more torque.....and you can build up crvtecs to have crazy amounts of power....but i think it'll cost more than you listed......plus actually building it'sgonna cost some cash........but if you can't do that stuff yourself, that would be tight......so if you got the cash.....i say crvtec.....but the b18c is a great motor too....i am thinking of dropping a usdm b18c1 into a coupe....just to prevent headaches from smog.....just my opinion.....:D:D

Yes I am talking about the GSR engine. I also think the type R is way overpriced so I would never get it.The b18c1 appeals to me because its a drop in and is very realiable. But alot of people do this swap with their i/h/e and only pull low 14s. I understand about the different cams that can be put in to increase peak horsepower but at the cost of torque. The crvtec is suppose to be a torque monster. Since also I would build the engine the right way with better pistons and rods it seems by cost that they almost equal but with the crvtec producing mid 13s with just i/h/e. When I do a engine swap into my car I just wanna make sure I'm getting the best for my money.

I don't know if anybody care out there but I have decided to go B18C1 over crvtec. It is actually because of the latest issue of HCI. They took a b18c and built it up with crower rods and je pistons and all the good stuff and turbo'ed it. It ran a 11.7 in a integra. The way I see the reliability of the crvtec just wasn't high enough for me. The b18c is a tried and true swap that porduces a powerfull pocket rocket. The way I see it is i can do all the usual add ons like i/h/e to it maybe get some cams and be happy with a great NA motor. Plus if I ever do get that "I need more" feeling a turbo is just around the corner. I just don't think I have the patience or the wallet for a motor that needs to be built just to run NA.

i've seen CRVtec with JDM civic type R pistons and rods lay down a whopping 240hp at the wheels. i say go crvtec and turbo it too. you can get 300hp at the wheel easily with the right tuning.

someone mentioned somewhere that a b20z engine has 140hp whereas the b20b only has 126hp... they both have 133lbs of torque right?

Yes the only difference between them is that a b20z has a higher compression ratio there by producing more power.

yup. the b20Z has 146hp and the B20B has 126hp both have the same torque.

i know the gs-r motor is a really good motor.....but just throwing in parts and turbo'ing it isn't gonna get you 11 sec timeslips......from wat i've seen before...you kind of want to work w/ a budget.....i think hitting 11's is gonna be a difficult task...

he's right. the faster you want to go, the more money it requires. st00pid over on superhonda spent $9,000 in mods and ended up with a streetable daily driven 92 civic hatchback that ran a 10.8sec at it's best. hell..he ran 11.9 on stock internals...by the way, this was from a B18C1. imaging what it'll do in a CRVtec.
get a turbo system, standalone engine management system, upgrade fuel system and electrical system. with the right tuning, you can run up to 20psi on stock internals. (with blockguard)

Oh its not that I want to hit 11's thats a little too far in the future (like maybe never). What I was saying is that with the b18c I'm gonna be happy because with some bolt ons and tuning I should have a streetable 13 sec hatch, maybe high 13's but none the less. That will the fastest car I have ever driven and own. The only reason I mentioned the 11 sec integra was because this was what they were able to do with a great system of building up and reinforcing. Your right I am on budget just like everyone else and each paycheck brings me closer to that b18c, its just nice to know that going with that engine there are no dead ends. You know what I mean:D

:flipa: The differances
B16: Quick reving low torque 140-150hp 111ft lbs
b18c: slightly slower {not much} to red line torque good 170hp 120-130t
B20:VTEC HEAD 184hp 156ftlbs awesome torque but slow to rev
This is with stock b20 piston
the only differance in the B18c And the b20 is 3 mm of piston size the stroke is the same!
My current car is under contstruction 97 civic coupe going b20 vtec with the b20b wit 8.8-1 cr and going to run 10lbs turbo
I have a friend who had a civic hatch 98 with a b18c 13.9's na and he had every bolt on or did he 173 hp????? he had a jun valve train!!!!!!! stock tis engine is 170 at wheels but he added a fuel pump and a pressure regulator aaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnddddddddddddd he got
200hp and believe me this car was eeexxtttrrreeemmmeeelllyyy
fast
oh by the way these hp numbers were witnessed @ my school
If there is any body that has a b20 civic coupe give me et and hp:smoka: :bandit: :smoker2: :smoka: :finger: :smoker2: :smoka:

how did they go about fitting 81mm civic pistons into the 84mm CRV block?
sounds impossible!

i'm running a crvtec in my 91 4door civic. mad mad mad power. type r is waaaaaaaaaay overpriced, not worth it at all. gsr is good but not crvtec good. people think its not reliable, but i know 7 people with it and they run them to hell every weekend some are running nos through it. and they are going on 2 1/2 years with crvtec. this setup is nice you will not be dissapointed.

he says the b18c-r, which is the type r motor, is 5 grand. he wasn't talking about the b18c1, which is the gsr motor.

i say screw getting the CRV block, and running the oil line, and all that crap. just get a GSR, get the block bored and resleeved for 2 liters, put a forged rotating assembly in it, and go. the GSR block has oil squirters and a block girdle. the CRV block doesnt. yeah i know the GSR has floating wall cylinders and all that, but its getting sleeved remember? the CRV block also has that special coating on the cylinder walls, and although i havent rebuilt one, ive been told that the block cannot be honed, and i know the coating cant possibly be as strong as a sleeved block.
even better, find a GSR block from someone who did the CRVTEC setup, and buy a b16a1 head (gotta swap sensors depending on OBD). do the above building of the block, put the b16 head on it, with a skunk2 valvetrain, some porting and polishing, and skunk2 intake manifold, and VIOLA!!! you have a 2 liter hypeR.

I would much rather go with the b18c over the cr-vtec. My reasoning is the GSR motor is much stronger bottom end. To build a good b20 you need to use the GSR bottom end. Plus the b20 cylinder walls are weak. I have heard so that so many people have had problems with sleeved b20 not being able to handle high compression. So if a sleeved motor can;t handle the compression or boost and you have to spend the money to sleeve it you are right up to the price of a GSR motor. So the price is not something to compare the two. The GSR motor IS the best motor honda has ever built. It has all the things that everyone wants. Oil squirters, crank girdle what more could you want. I have done a lot of research on this desicion and that is why i have just recently started to build my all-motor B18C1.
