car shutting down

No codes show up that pertain to my 1999 Intrigue shutting down at very unexpected times, like at 60 mph on a freeway, or trying 7 times to start the car.
Olds has no answer yet, and neither does my independant mechanic. Anybody out there have any ideas or the same experience?

Sounds like a crank position sensor problem to me. The CPS will not throw a code in most cases but will cause the shutting down that you describe. Most of the technicians today will not believe that it will not throw a code but it usually does not. If you change it I believe your stalling issue will go away.

Thanks GDP Dad,
I'll certainly get this possible solution to my mechanic and my Olds dealer.
I'll keep you posted.

make a log book and take a stopwatch with you when you run your car. Start the stopwatch when you start your car and time it when you get a stall. Watch where on the temp guage it stalls also.

My car would stall right when the temp would hit the 1/4 mark. I kept the revs up by keeping it in second gear (city driving) 2k+ - 1200 rpm at all times. Once it went past 1/4 temp I never had a stall and I could drive normally. Eventually the CKP sensor will get worse and stall anywhere before the 1/4 temp mark.

I fixed my CKP and the problem is now gone. I did get the OBD2 codes for a faulty CKP sensor.

Remember you can restart your Intrigue in neutral also. (this is much better than park at times)

Your car stalls, but then starts right back up and then it runs normally after the first stall? Or does it stall again after the first stall.
