escort hand brake (disk)

does any one know if the hand brake and the foot brake are two separate units (escort GT disk) or is it the same unit. The resin why im asking is because winter has just rolled around and when I pull the hand brake my wheels dont lock up and I have new back brakes so I know thats not the problem. If they are the same unit does any one know what else it could be.

Is the cable to the hand brake adjusted properly?

ya i know that it is engaging when i pull it up there is just very little friction but there is some enough to stop me on a hill but if i push the car it slips pretty easy and it is not just because the cable is not tight enough

I've never worked on Escort rear discs but I have worked on them on a Ford Crow Victoria. It had a disc for the regular brakes and on the backside of it was a drum brake for the hand brake. Not sure if Escort is same.

no the GT escorts have disk in the back and they must be separate unites it is the only thing that would make since. well im going to go find that out c ya

no they arnt i have the same rear disc's

There is a screw by the Handle you have to turn to re adjust the break after you replace the pads. It tightens the cable.

Are the pistons of the caliper adjusted right? You take the screw plug off of the back of the piston housing and this will get you to the adjusting gear which is turned with an allen wrench. Turn it until the pads lightly contact with the disc and then back it off 1/3 turn. Replace the plug. The parking brake is a cable. You can adjust it at the lever inside the car until it contacts at the 6th or 7th notch. My car's rear brakes are shoes, but I know some about the rear disc brakes. Let us know how it went.

good job Davescort97 i brought my car to the dealer today and that was right on key. it was the clipper i have to tighten the screw and... well pretty much exactly what u said. i wish i would have waited till i saw your response then i would have look as if i knew what was talking about lol. i know that it wasnt the cable by the handle, i had that sh** mad tight the end of the threads were coming out the slit ha ha ha (ghetto) so ya.

I have new everything brake wise on the back of my car, I've adjusted that bolt so that the pads touch and STILL the ebrake barely works. It will hold the car on a slight hill when I park it but if I put it in gear and try to move the car moves with little problem.

r u sure that we r talking about the same bole. im not talking about the one on the handle im talking about the one on the calipper in the back of the car inside the tire. could u let me know if that is the one that u were talking about.

That would be the one, the one on the back of the caliper, I beleive it's like a 14mm bolt that is over the allen screw that adjusts the caliper piston. The bolt inside the car, 10mm, on the ebrake handle is tightened so there is tension as soon as you move the handle and still they grab just barely. Ebrake cables, calipers, pads, rotors are all new. The only thing I could think of that could maybe do it is the 2 screws that hold the rotors to the disc where the lug nuts are broke on both sides, but I would think the tire being on tight would make it so the rotor wouldn't move.

aww man that suckes i hope that i dont have that problem but i am haveing the feeling that im going to. u know what i know it is going to be that. im going to start a new forum to see if any one with 1994 escort has a working hand brake baby it is just the car. well what ever thatnks for your help

ya i figured that out over the last couple days i was going to get the callipers adjusted and i had that bolt on the handle tightened really tight. when i loosen it my hand brake was working betted then ever and i am now able to do rally turns like a pro. before i thought the tighter the handle the better it should work right. wrong when u do that u r lousing a lot of leverage and i never thought of that till i loosen it. what u r suppose to do is pull it up 7 notches and tighten it till it grabs

After you got all new stuff in the back then did you andjust the adjustment on the parking brake lever? This is important stuff. We call it 'parking brake' but it is really the 'Emergency Bake'. :thumbsup:

he said that he had his handle so what when he pulls it he has instant tension so i think that he had the same problem as me
