i bypassed my heater core and now my low coolant light wont go off and my fluid is full? does anyone know y ?i by passed my heater core recently .if i pay my mechanic to replace the core he,ll break 2 or 3 other things. i then had a defrost the windshield problem. solution = i ordered a dash mount little electric defroster. it plugs into cigarette lighter. cost me $29. total delievered to my door from autobahn.com it won,t keep me warm in the winter, but it sure will help me avoid getting in a wreck. i can see where i,m going now.

if the cicarette lighter receptacle quits working then i,m forced to deal with core replacement and the other broken parts when the job is finished. OR i can simply kick into plan B mode = start using "rain-x brand interior defogger". it wipes on easily and it works. it,s great on the bathroom mirror also. Or if i can find new mechanic that,ll replace the core for $250. without breaking things i,ll pay.

HA, it's so amazing to see so many of us have the same problems! I called a dealer who wanted $900 to replace the heater core. I was going to try your plug in heater trick, but guess what? The lighter doesn't work! Time to search around and find either a cheaper mechanic to do it, or bite the bullet and do it myself...hate to do that, as I'm a bit too big to work in tight spots very well! LOL, what a month!

Back to orig problem "racer77" when ever I drain my fluid level out of my overflow bottle I get an air bubble around the low coolant sensor, I take the bottle loose and shake it a bit, then start the car with the lid off and let the car go thru its heating and cooling cycle, you can tell when the thermostat opens and let it run until the fan comes on. Then I replace the lid and drive it for a while, that usually takes care of it, if not it will go away in a day or so.
As for the heater core, I haven't had to do one on my grand am yet, but I have done them on other vehicles, they are not that hard, just tedious, did one in my s10 blazer last weekend in 4 hrs, and yes im a big guy myself, so I feel your pain, just do it before you get into a wreck.

LOL there is a sensor in the bottom on the coolent container... this sensor is completly junk its favorite thing to do is quit working after the the coolent gets low enough to trip the light. This is not your over heating light. So u can do 2 things. that sensor cost about $7 at a parts store. On my 92` grand am i have went through 3 of those sensors so finally i just took the bulb out of the dash so it wouldnt come on. And i have also put one of those sensors in my 96` grand am and so far (crosses fingers) it has'nt given me anymore problems. So i hope this helps.
