1997 Camry LE

I have two questions. I am hearing a rattling or clunking in both front wheel wells when going over bumbs in the road, it is more prominant when it is colder. Is this realted to my struts? Or is something loose? I also need to find my tach wire under the hood for a remote starter install, is this easy to spot? Thanks for your help.

The noise is probably the front strut mounts. This is a known problem on 97-99 Camrys. Do a search on this forum for "front strut mounts" and read up. It is considered a benign noise, just an irritating noise.

Tach wire should be a black wire in a gray plug at the coil on the driver's side of the motor for the 4 cyl engine, or a gray wire at the ignitor on a bracket just in front of the strut tower on the 6 cyl model. The module says "Denso" on it.

Thanks. Its nice to know this is benign. I will do a search. If I need new struts someday I may have them fixed.

Thanks for the info on the wire. I read a post after mine that mentioned two coils on the camry, that's what was confusing me, but only one has a grey plug. Thanks.

No problem. Happy to help. Good luck with that remote start. I know the first one I did took me over 6 hours to do. They can be a bitch. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Double-check the remote instructions. Most of these do not read the tach through that wire. This is usually used in older cars, or cars that can't get the signal from the computer.

In other words, you don't need that connection.

Largely depends on the brand/ type of remote start system. Many can be set up for voltage sense, though a good tach source is the most solid way for the remote start system to know when to stop cranking the car.

I had already done the install a few months ago, it was a major pain in the you know what even in warm weather! Its a bulldog. I setup the system without the tach but I notice in colder weather it will retry two or three times to get the car started, I figured with the tach sense wire (and you have to program it to check) it would just crank until it starts. My car starts easily but it has a very short crank, I'm guessing there is no delay to allow the gas to build pressure before the start? But it usually starts on the second try.
