What are you looking to tow? Not good tow rigs???that is too broad an accusation...not good to tow HUGE HEAVY trailers...absolutely.
some 87/88s have a unique hub...valuable for Ebay sale if they are still good.
Typically they will have a C6 or AOD Auto trans. C6 would be better for a tow rig. (no OD)
351 (5.8) would be better than the 302 (5.0)
check the gutter rails above the rear of the doors for cracks. Have seen PLENTY of these crack here...which is only really a problem for wet conditions...and for looks.
I have had 4 of the full size BKOs and really like them for most stuff...even towing a 24' triple axle trailer. just have a well set up hitch. and brakes

What gives the Bronc the rep for "bad for towing" is the rear brakes. Since these vehicles are HUGE, the braking pressure get uneven between the discs, and the drums.
I've had my 88 5.8 AT for a long time, and I love it. I got an 87 5.0 MT for the tranny. More on that later.
The key is if you're going to get "One of the good ones". Do a complete visual inspection, especially around the fender wells. Those can get caked with mud, and you're in for it.

mostly its the short wheelbase.
if you are towing something that is gonna cause the huge uneven braking pressure..you better add trailer brakes.....which isn't a bad idea anyway.
JMHO.
