I have a 94 ford escort with bad lug nuts. I removed the halfshaft retaining nut, just not quite sure how to remove the hub so I can get to the lug nut bolts. I would like to remove just the hub itself and keep everything else on it, but still not out the question.

I was looking at my manual and it looks like a pretty big job. First, remove the brake caliper. Then, tap the half shaft with a brass hammer or similar soft metal to break it free of the splines in the hub. Now unhook the strut, ball joint and tie rod end. The steering knuckle/hub should come off at this point. Pop out the inner seal and use a drift pin to tap the hub out of the knuckle assy bearing. You might be able to knock the old studs out with a hammer. If not a machine shop can press them out. Get some new studs and grease seal and put her back together. By the way, have you tried tapping new threadon to the existing studs? I'm posting a picture. Hope it helps. Appears the snap ring is just to hold the bearing in so you shouldn't have to mess with it.
