95 starter issues

95 sport, 4.0. Replaced starter awhile back, and every couple weeks or so, won't start. Go underneath loosin bolts, back out starter and retighten, works fine. What am i doin wronge that it keeps doin this, overtightening mounting bolts maybe?

When it dosen't start, what happens? Nothing at all, noise from starter but doesn't turn, turns but too slow to start engine, etc.

can hear solinoid activating, but starter doesn't turn. starter gear is binding against fly wheel, and when i loosin starter bolts and back out the starter and then retighten, it works fine for awhile. But then without warning, it will bind up again. Took the starter in and had it tested, tested fine.

I had a blazer do this....only once though, right after a new starter was put on, just got a faint click. I just kept bouncing the key from run to start a few times then it cranked and never did it again in the remaining yr we had the blazer. On GMs though they have shims to adjust clearances between the starter gear and flywheel, not sure if that can even be done w/ a chrysler starter, how does it mount? DO the bolts go up from the bottom or in from the side or do they go into the block, like in parallel w/ the startermotor body? Hard to describe what I'm trying to state, but bascially if you were to place a shim under a bolt between the starter and block how would it move it, just in and out or would it move it up and down in relation to the block, as in to allow more clearance between the 2 gears?

mounting is kinda odd (in my oppinion). mounted to motor with two bolts, lower bolt threads in from front to rear of vehicle, upper bolt mounts from rear to front of vehicle, no shims. lower bolt apprx 2" long, upper bolt about 1 1/4"long. lower bolt passes through starter and threads into bell housing, upper bolt passes through bell and threads into starter.

Does the part of the starter body which goes into the bellhousing and is designed to fit snugly into the starter mounting hole fit tightly? Are the bolt holes worn to the point that the starter can move around within the mounting hole? Is it a rebuilt starter? Is the machined portion which mates with the mounting hole be worn? This mounting system is usually very reliable in keeping the starter positioned properly without having to shim to get a good fit. The proper fit is built in by the snug fit of the starter in the opening of the bellhousing.
