How much are BB motors going for? What about GTIR's?

b-b00gie
08-03-2001, 03:31 PM
BB DET's are about $1500-2200 depending on your shopping skills

a DET from a GTI-R is about $2500 if you can find one. they're a little more wanted/harder to find, so the price is usually a little more...

Welcome to the club. :D

What year is your G20?

Let me know if you have any questions. Having just been through it, I can help you through a lot of things, although a BB DET swap is relatively straightforward.

Primera man, Ales => Thanks, I will definitely post the progress of my SR20DET swap.

Redvalkrie => Good luck on your search for the G22DET

AznVirus => I am pretty sure I'll like the motor :smoker:

George => I have a 92 automatic G20. I'll post a pic once I get some pics scanned. Thank you for offering your help and expertise. :D I will take you up on that.

Let me get this straight.... one of these Bluebirds is $2000? What other costs are involved? I'm sure there is more to it than the cost of the engine swap but how much more?

total cost, for a turbo.. or DET swap... you are looking at $4000 to 5000.

...you should at least budget that anyway. you may have some left over, but all the little misc. items start to add up...

some break down for you guys in regards on the cost of the whole install...I might miss somehting but basically you are looking at...
DET motor (from me, $1500 plus shipping)
Front Mount Intercooler - $1000 roughly
Intercooler piping - $200 to $800 (depend on quality and material)
all the necessory gauges ex. oil temp, oil pres. boost and most importantly the EGT (exhaust-gas temp gauge), if you are planning to get just one gauge, get the EGT. Total gauge price - $600 or so. EGT gauge is around $200-350.
Labor - $1500 to $2000...free if you know how to do it.
maintance parts such as accessory belts, alternator, spark plugs, wires, new oil, new freon..around $200.
turbo timer - $130
plan on having at least $500 laying around just incase if you need more things.
this is pretty much the same for P10s and P11s, but for the P11, best to find an OBD1 ecu/harness, tha'ts what i did..it'll make it easier and no engine check light would be on.

You have to have a downpipe made. Hopefully HotShot will offer one separate from the DET installation kit - cost $100-250. You really should get a front mount intercooler - cost $200-1,000 depending upon a lot of factors and whether you buy new or used. Piping for said intercooler - I'd guess about $300-500. A JWT ECU gives you plug and play engine management - $500-600.

If you have a P10, HotShot should be producing the piping that I have made. I don't have any idea about price yet though.

Hehe

I posted before seeing Luke's post. Amazing how similar they are, eh?

Well, that should give you a good idea of the expense involved. I didn't even think about labor since I do it all myself.

I'm in the process of documenting the swap. Expect to see something in 2-3 months (sorry it's not sooner).

Actually I really like the 3rd gen RX-7's. I was looking at them before I bought my G. You can get them pretty cheap now. Lots of the guys that bought them are trying to get rid of them because they are too much hassle. It's the type of car that needs to be well maintained, it's pretty finicky. The SCC project RX-7 really got me thinking about these cars. They look timeless and will definatly be a classic. I'd drop the cheezy TT setup for a single big hair dryer. :D

What kept me from buying one? I didn't feel like paying $500+/month for insurance. I have a thing about paying more for insurance than I'd pay for financing. :p

Why is the insurance so expensive? My "mandatory" insurance costs me around $80 a year. In case of an accident I only pay for damages to my car (if I'm guilty)...

not to mention if you want to increase the performance or just drive it a bit harder, you gotta rebuild the rotary. but it's a great car, i love it....btw, look for the up coming Turbo magazine with a orange FD...it was done by our friend, SP engineering...can you say 700 daily driven HP????

George,
Is Hotshot producing a Turbo Kit for the P10 SR20DE? Or Just Piping and downpipe for a SR20DET transplant?

Boogie is right..... Diesel radiator provides better cooling. I have some overheating. It's right on the edge. No AC and it doesn't overheat. Temps below 90 F and it doesn't overheat. If I turn on the heater, the gauge drops like a stone.

I haven't forgotten the rear fogs. I just can't do it right now. It's on my list though. I really like them.

They are supposed to be using my IC piping to make a DET installation kit. In fact, I've been playing phone tag with John yesterday and today.

I want to redo the piping because I think I can do a better job, although the ones I have are pretty good. I just think I can improve them a bit.

well, for labor....u can find place ranging from 500-2500usd...it's really depend on who does the job and who does it right.
as for the part, the price i was using is all top quality japanese products such as blitz gauges, HKS intercooler...etc..etc..of course you can get brands such as autometer, spearco...blah blah and would save you a lot of money

I e.mailed jgycustoms awhile ago and they gave me a quote, can anyone tell me if this sounds right?

$850 - labor/manipulations (?)
$1600 - motor
$550 - JWT ECU
$100 - exhaust work
$200 - misc.
Total: $3300

I don't know what misc. includes, whether that's gauges or what not. From what everyone is saying, it sounds a little cheap compared to the $4,000 - $5,000 everyone's saying to expect. I want good quality stuff so, I just wanna make sure. :)
I'll be getting my DET mid-novemberish, WOOHOO! :D

I just talked with John about this yesterday. The plan is for me to make a second set of pipes (I can do a little better job the second time around) and send them to John.

The rest depends upon demand. If the demand is there, I'm sure he'll make them. It would be for a total installation kit. You supply the sweat and the engine, HS will supply the rest. :D

I was goin to do the same to my 1993 G20 but it would cost me about $2000
NZ (less than a grand US I think not including the labour of course)
with computer. I am but a poor student..:(

There are a few turb's Primeras in Auckland a couple I believe are T4's like
I used to have (4WD so they use the GTiR motor with Quad throttle body
and forged pistons!).

G'day PrimeraMan, it is good to see another Kiwi.

To everybody else, Austrailia has the misfortune of having a tightly controlled
quota for the import of Japanese cars so they get sod all cool cars like G20's
and Primeras like we do in Nz. If anyone wants to see a cool site with cool links
to Japanese supercars www.skylinesdownunder.com

Note: Austrailia has "Crocodiles" but no Gators. They do have one Psycho however
that does like to go around the world and try to kill himself.:)

The Aussie scene is a bit different alright.
You only have to get a few of there mags and its the same cars/makes that keep coming up.
What they do is very good apart from all this air-brushed art work they are getting into.

I remember sending to a body kit place looking for kits and they never heard of a Primera, let alone a G20
