Park lock cable

Hey guys, I have this cable on my 1986 Grand Am that I think is called the park lock cable, but I'm not sure. It runs from the button on the shifter up to under the steering wheel. When I push the button on the shifter, the other end of the cable moves. Does anybody know exactly where this cable attaches? I was thinking it goes to the ignition switch, but I just can't figure out how it clips on. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Oh, here's a picture of the cable, sorry for the bad quality.

Total guess here. It may be the sensor that lights the BRAKE light on your dash. Like i said. just a guess. Best of Luck.

it looks lik the device that keeps you from putting the car in gear without the brake on.Or the Neutral/Park Position Switch. THe end shown in white slides into somewhere, looks familur, but i'm not sure..... where abouts did you find this end?

Oops...read it wrong. Disregard my comment. I thought you said it was on the parking brake. Sorry.

I just recently replaced my heater core, and when I was doing that, I found this cable just hanging there right underneath the steering wheel. It comes from the shifter, goes under the carpet, and comes out by the pedals. Looks like it goes up underneath the steering wheel somewhere, but just can't seem to figure out what it connects to. Someone had suggested to be yesterday that it might attach to the brake pedal somewhere, but I just couldn't figure out where this thing went.

are your break lights working? There is a switch under the pedal that trigers the rear breaklights, but that pic looks diff. Is the car other wise working right as far as the shifter and breaks?

The brakes and brake lights work perfect. I can move the shifter through the gears without the car being on or without my foot on the brake. So I'm assuming that's not right. When I push the button on the shifter, the little white piece on the end of the cable in the picture pulls back. So I'm assuming this is the park lock cable I've heard about.

I just looked at a diagram, and it looks like this cable goes to the ignition switch. I looked at a picture of the right ignition switch online for my car, and I think I see the part where this cable plugs into. The problem is, my ignition switch doesn't have this part, so I'm starting to think at one time somebody might of put the wrong ignition switch in my car and just left the park lock cable disconnected. I think the ignition switch in there is for a manual transmission and not an automatic, which would explain why it has nowhere for the park lock cable to go.

The cable is supposed to attach to the ignition switch and prevent you from starting the car while its in gear. Its probably the wrong switch, if you don't want to replace the switch, make sure anyone else who drives your car is aware of the problem so accidents don't happen.

Yeah, the switch really isn't that expensive, so I think I'll go ahead and replace it. Especially since I already have the old one out.
