grinding noise when accelerating in firstgear

I have a 96 Achieva, 4 cyl, 2.4L, fuel inject., automatic.

When I am accelerating from a stop, or very slow roll, I hear a grinding noise coming from the front of the car somewhere. It only does this when I punch the gas too hard, like when the transmission is under a higher load than normal driving. It seems to only do this in first gear, and it sounds like a manual transmission when someone grinds the gears.

I read in a GMC forum someone had the same problem and mentioned something about it being a problem with the tires, however it doesnt seem likely. Please help. thanks

try checking the transaxle oil it might be low, you might have a small leak in it. or it could be your cv axle.

I am having this same exact problem... Neither of the suggestions are the issue for me. If you know what is causing this, please let me know.

There also seems to be oil leaking onto the engine, and it overheats extremely fast when sitting in traffic.

PLEASE, help if you can. This forum is great, I just registered, but it has helped me with a few problems over the last 3 years. Thanks for any info
