Hey, It's Me Again. Finally Got My 1988 Dx Started, But It's Got A Terrible Rod Knock. Question/ Can I Change These Without Taking The Head Off, By Just Taking The Oil Pan Off? This May Be A Dumb Question, I'm Not Sure. But I Appreciate Al Input. Thanks. Tk.

well, assuming there is no machine work to be done, you can do that. but your life will be miserable.

new rods, gasket, and macine work, your better off with swapping a used d15 with no problems.

Thanks For Getting Back With Me So Quick. I Am Not Currently Driving It, I Just Put This Block In The Car, The Guy I Bought It From Said It Was Fine, You Know How That Goes. Thanks Again.

on my ls motor you couldnt take the pistons out from the bottom, you had to pull them through the top because you gotta take the piston out to remove the wrist pin to change the rod. so you need to pull the head

How can you tell it has a rod knock? Is it pretty loud or is it very faint? Is it deep or high? And is it very rapid and not continuous or is it steady and continuous? Just curious.

Mine had rod knock and it sounded like someone hitting a piece of metal with a hammer in my car.

on my motor made more of a knocking sound as oppose to a clicking sound, it will get faster as the rpms increase. i heard mine over my open header so yeah. at first though it might just be a slight ticking and will get louder over time. it depends on what exactly happen to the rod bearings.

If your rod is knocking there is a good chance you crank is shot or needs turned, and your rod is likely to be gone.

yeah i'd pay money to see someone pull a piston and rod out past the crank...

best idea would to get a used block and swap it in. days worth of work tops even if you are slow.

drain the oil, run a magnet through it a bit if you cant already see the fragments of oil floating around. you can change bearings by just dropping the oil pan, but like stated above... if you spun a bearing, theres like a 90 percent chance (at least) that your crank and/or rod are seriously damaged.

if you spun a bearing, it would be retarded. There is no way there isnt tiny metal shavings that you cant see all over the place. and when you replace that one bearing, or even if you do all of them, all the shavings are gonna got stuck in the new bearings, causing hot spots, and its just gonna make a big mess.

So either pull the motor out and rebuild it, or get a new block.

Mine started knocking for about 2 min then I heard a loud boom and black smoke everywhere. At that time I realized it was time to move on lol
