Yea, man that sucks, I really need to find out more info on a speed sensor!
Hey gthompson97, you took apart a 420A engine a few times, right? Would you happen to know how a 1997 420A engine speed sensor would look like! THANKS!

Here is what I posted in a previous thread:
My speedo and odometer have been broken for the longest time! So after reading many threads on speed sensors goind bad (on dsmtuners), I decided to go and look into the problem! OK so i took out the speed sensor, and attached a drill to the end of the metal shaft, and the speedo worked, so there is nothing wrong with the sensor!
SO, here is my question, how long is that metal shaft (the one on the speed sensor, that drops down into the tranny) supposed to be (I hope you know what I am talking about)? Because mine was only about an inch, I fear that maybe it is supposed to be longer!
Thanks very MUCH!!

Also is there supposed to be some sort of plastic gear/sprocket on the end of the speed sensor?

ok i'm confused...you asked about an ENGINE speed sensor and now your talking about it being located in the tranny. i'm pretty sure there's not a sensor that reads "engine speed' and i don't know much about the speed sensor that's located in the tranny, i haven't had to replace one yet.
i would assume that there is supposed to be something that it measures from, maybe a gear or sprocket, i'm not sure. look into the tranny from where you removed it and see if you can see anything that it's supposed to "mesh" with or something of that sort.

Ohh yea its in the tranny! What I meant was the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)...already posted a thread on this site and dsmtuner about 3 days ago, but now luck...I have also been going around town to auto shops with no luck...Bummer
Anyways THANKS!
Anyways THANKS!

the vehicle speed sensors are usually located on the wheels aren't they? instead of inside the tranny? i'd check all the sensors on the wheels and make sure that they are working first. i'm pretty sure that the vehicle speed sensors are on the backside of the hubs (or somewhere around the hub).

Well actually, I pulled out the speed sensor today (the one on the tranny) and attached a drill to the end of it, and sure enough the speedometer moved. So obviosly the metal shaft and/or plastic gear has broken off, therefore not being be to spin, therefore not being able to move the speedo & odometer!
All I am really looking for is a picture of the speed sensor to see if mine needs replacement of the gears! I hope that makes sense...but it is definitly on the tranny though....

alrighty...well then, try going to an auto parts store or something and comparing yours to a new one and see if there is any difference.

I tried that but no one caries that particualr speed sensor, I guess the next stop is the junkyard and then the dealership!

you could maybe check at the dealership for a diagram too...that might be able to tell you what it looks like. or even ask a technician, they could maybe tell you.

But Josh - Is that all the sensor consists of? Is there supposed to be a plastic sprocket/gear on the end of the shaft or what? Because the sensor I have now works (attached a drill to it), but when place in the tranny, it wont work, obviously because the shaft isnt spinning!
What could be wrong?? :banghead:

Test the resistance at the connector like it shows there.
It should read 3,000-10,000 ohms.
