85 s10 looses power will only run about 40 mph floored. This only happens when outside temps. are around freezing. Runs strong in warm weather.

What motor?

Does it re-gain strength when it warms up.

I know that without a properly working choke on mine it's gutless until it warms up in the cold weather, but then it's a powerfull little 2.8L

It has the 2.8 liter with a 5 speed manual trans. Usually the power loss problem occurs after I have driven at highway speed (65 m.p.h.) for about 10 to 12 miles early in the morning with the outside temp. around 32 degrees and a high moisture content in the air. (fog, rain, heavy frost, etc.) The engine does not stall or run rough it just looses power and will only run between 30 and 45 m.p.h. So far I have managed to make it to work and the truck has run fine on the way home.

There is a thermostat located in the air filter assemboly, that might not be opening right up when it should.
This would cause the truck to basicly choke it's self out.

Other than that all that I can think of is the air filter almost plugged up.

If you can't find that thermostat let me know, and I'll snap a pic and show you where it is tomorrow

Your problem only happens in cold weather with a lot of moisture content......there's a good possibility you may be experiencing some carb icing. Besides checking the operation of your choke, you should check the operation of:

1) Hot air system.... there should be an accordian hose from a plenum on the driver's side exhaust manifold to the air cleaner snorkel; make sure it is in place and intact. There is a vacuum operated flapper valve mounted on the snorkel.... it should open (allowing heated air into the air cleaner) when vacuum is applied. Check the operation using a vacuum gun or some human supplied suction. The valve should open when suction is applied. Make sure the internal diaphragm on the vacuum motor is not leaking... does the valve stay open when you quit sucking or applying vacuum (obviously while the end of the hose is plugged)? If it doesn't, then your vacuum motor is shot and needs replacing. Towards the backside of the air cleaner, mounted on the air cleaner, is a tempurature probe (it protrudes into the inside of the aircleaner) with vacuum lines attatched to it; make sure the vacuum lines are solid. A good weekend project for your '85 would be to replace all the vacuum lines with new ones.... the '85 has a bunch of them... I did this on my '85 (it still has to pass emissions) and it ran much better and brought all the emissions gear back to proper operation.

Hope this helps....
